Today in History (September 25):
1392 Sergius of Radonezh, Abbot of the Holy Trinity, died (b. Bartolomei Kirillovich, 1314). He came from a once-wealthy family and lived with his parents until their deaths in 1334. He was tonsured a monk three years later and was ordained a priest. In 1340 he established the monastery of the Holy Trinity, one of forty that he founded. He created several monastery schools and taught farmers better methods of farming. He refused the patriarchate of Moscow in 1378. Two years later he urged Prince Saint Dimitri Donskoi to fight the Tatars, whom Donskoi defeated at Kulikovo.
1493 Twelve Spanish missionaries set sail for the New World to formally introduce Christianity to America.
1534 Pope Clement VII died (b. Giulio de' Medici, 1478). An unpopular pope, Clement failed to halt Luther's reformation or to implement his own reforms in the Catholic Church. Henry VIII asked Clement VII to annul his marriage with Catherine of Aragon. The pope's indecision led to Henry VIII's break from Catholicism.
1635 Johann Gottfried Olearius, hymnist, was born at Halle (d. 1711). He was educated at Leipzig and Jena and served as diaconus at Halle and superintendent and consistorial councilor at Arnstadt. He also wrote in the field of patristics. His hymns include "Komm, du wertes Lösegeld" and "Es war die ganze Welt."

"Blessed Assurance"

A cynic might conclude that payola and commercial influences on music started in Fort Greene during its "Hymn Pan Alley" period. An example is Fanny Crosby's signature song "Blessed Assurance." Fanny wrote the words at the home of her patroness, Phoebe Palmer Knapp, just after Phoebe had plunked out the original tune on the piano in her Bedford-Stuyvesant parlor. Fanny's immediate reply was "Why Phoebe, that sounds like 'Blessed Assurance' to me." Surely, Mrs. Crosby could not have been unmindful of the fact that her patroness's husband, Joseph Knapp, was president of a major New York life insurance company-then called an assurance company. This tongue-in-cheek reference to Mr. Knapp's "assurance" business was not so much and impropriety as a subtle commercial for the enterprise that enabled Mrs. Knapp to hold salons at which she and Fanny played their latest compositions.

THE BATTLE FOR THE KING JAMES BIBLE: 1800-1870
David W. Cloud The following is an excerpt from Chapter Two of the book For Love of the Bible: The Battle for the King James Version and the Received Text from 1800 to Present We are convinced that it is impossible to understand the issue of Bible texts and versions apart from a correct understanding of these matters. In the following chapters we will attempt to highlight the social and theological influences of the last two centuries which have played a key role in the development of the modern versions. By the early 1800s the King James Bible had ruled supreme in the English- speaking world for 200 years. It's predecessors, going back to the 1526 Tyndale Version, were the same basic Bibles. They were based upon the same Greek text and employed the same type of translation methodology. They were formal equivalencies, meaning the translators labored to carry the precise words and phrasings of the underlying Greek and Hebrew texts into the receptor language. Those who used the King James Bible in the early nineteenth century were using a Bible with 300 years of antiquity in English. The underlying Greek text had been accepted by Bible-believing Christians of the sixteenth century as the authentic representation of the Apostolic writings. Thus they called it the Received Text. In their estimation, this text had been faithfully transmitted through the centuries. This carries the antiquity of the King James Bible back, we believe, to the Apostles.
