Han Introduction Numerous scholars and critics have discussed the influence of the Bible on mainstream Western authors. In their lecture series The Bible and Western Culture Utopia Measure for Measure A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , and other literary works in the Western tradition. David Daniell, in his voluminous work The Bible in English A substantial amount of research has also focused on the impact of Scripture on African American authors. Dr. Fu Manchu series also augmented the early twentieth-century stereotype of the Chinese as intelligent but sinister heathens. Even some Asian American writers willingly adopted the image of Asians as pagans. In the 1920s through the 1950s, Dr. No-Yong Park, a Harvard-educated Korean/Chinese American scholar, wrote several nonfiction books for readers who were curious of the Asian lifestyle and the future of China. In one of those books, The Divine Comedy The Pilgrim's Progress Paradise Lost . Until very recently, most American writers of Asian descent depended heavily on autobiography as a medium for literary expression. Some of these writers were professing Christians but had neither high-level language skills nor time to produce sophisticated poems or dramas with Christian themes.

Preface THE lectures included in this volume were prepared at the request of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and were delivered in the early part of 1912, under its auspices. They were suggested by the tercentenary of the King James version of the Bible. The plan adopted led to a restatement of the history which prepared for the version, and of that which produced it. It was natural next to point out its principal characteristics as a piece of literature. Two lectures followed, noting its influence on literature and on history. The course closed with a statement and argument regarding the place of the Bible in the life of to-day. The reception accorded the lectures at the time of their public delivery, and the discussion which ensued upon some of the points raised, encourage the hope that they may be more widely useful. It is a pleasure to assign to Dr. Franklin W. Hooper, director of the Institute, whatever credit the work may merit. Certainly it would not have been undertaken without his kindly urgency.
