Eponyms An eponym is a word derived from the name of a real, fictional, mythical or spurious character or person. Most eponyms originate from a person's surname: boycott , for instance, from the Irish landlord Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott; dahlia , from the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl; the sousaphone , from the American bandmaster John Philip Sousa; and volt , from the Italian physicist Count Alessandro Volta. Many eponymous words come from literary, biblical or mythological sources: malapropism , from Mrs Malaprop in Sheridan's The Rivals Dickensian , from the English writer Charles Dickens; as old as Methuselah , from the age of the Old Testament patriarch; and aphrodisiac , from the Greek goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite. There are thousands of eponyms in everyday use in English today and study of them yields a fascinating insight into the rich heritage of the world's most popular language and its development. Karl May Zpìt na seznam autorù Karl May se narodil 25. února 1842 v saském Emstthalu v rodinì chudého tkalce. Dìtství prožil v neskuteèné bídì, díky špatné výživì a nedostatku hygieny krátce po narození oslepl a zrak se mu zlepšil až v pìti letech po odborném ošetøení. Ve škole se projevil jako nadaný žák. Roku 1861 nastoupil jako uèitel v chudinské škole, ale záhy byl obvinìn z krádeže, odsouzen k šesti týdnùm vìzení a do konce života již nesmìl vykonávat uèitelské povolání. Ocitá se na dnì, bez práce a bez budoucnosti. Dopustí se nìkolika drobných krádeží, je dopaden a odsouzen ke ètyøem rokùm nucených prací. Roku 1868 je pro dobré chování pøedèasnì propuštìn, ale z jakéhosi pominutí smyslù se dopouští dalších vesmìs komických krádeží (v restauraci ukradne pìt biliárových koulí a pøi vloupání do hospody odcizí utìrku a jednu cigaretovou špièku). Dopadeného "zloèince" soud odsoudí ke ètyøem letùm vìzení. Když May ve 32 letech opouští vìzení, snil o velkých cestách za dobrodružstvím a bohatstvím. A teï své sny pøepisuje na papír. Roku 1875 se stává èasopiseckým redaktorem u nakladatele Münchmeyera, ve stejném roce v povídce OLD FIREHAND poprvé zmiòuje jméno Vinnetou. Jeho napínavých povídek si všímají i jiní nakladatelé. O dva roky pozdìji se May stává autorem na volné noze. Od roku 1881 mu vycházejí romány z Orientu, kde hlavním hrdinou je Kara Ben Nemsi. Dále píše mnohasvazkové kolportážní románky, v nichž sice není nouze o dobrodružství, ale jsou "sešité horkou jehlou" a May se pod nì nepodepisuje. Pøesto se jméno Karl May stává zaklínadlem a nakladatelé mu další rukopisy doslova trhají z rukou. Na svých autorských cestách pøijímá až 800 návštìv dennì, plakátù a fotografù Karla Maye v kostýmu Old Shatterhanda se prodá roènì mnoho tisíc.
