He worked in a government office at Paris and became known c.1880 as the most brilliant of the circle of Zola. He poured out a prodigious number of short stories, novels, plays, and travel sketches until 1891, when he went mad. He died in a sanitarium. Maupassant's style and treatment of subject resemble those of Flaubert in classic simplicity, clarity, and objective calm. Maupassant is a modern exemplar of traditional French psychological realism; he portrays his characters as unhappy victims of their greed, desire, or vanity but presents even the most sordid details of their lives without sermonizing. His best novels are considered to be Une Vie (1883, tr.

In Sur l'Eau he remarks, "Migraine is atrocious torment, one of the worst in the world, weakening the nerves, driving one mad, scattering one's thoughts to the winds and impairing the memory. So terrible are these headaches that I can do nothing but lie on a couch and try to dull the pain by sniffing ether."

Guy De Maupassant (1850-1893) was born in Normandy, the son of a wealthy stockbroker. Unable to accept discipline in school, he joined the army during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Then for seven years he apprenticed himself to Gustave Flaubert, a distant relative, who attempted to teach him to write. Maupassant remembered, "I wrote verses, short stories, longer stories, even a wretched play. Nothing survived. The master read everything. Then the following Sunday at lunch, he developed his criticisms." Flaubert taught Maupassant that talent "is nothing other than a long patience. Work." In 1880 Maupassant caused a sensation with the publication of his story "Boule de Suif" ("Ball of Fat"), a dramatic account of prostitution and bourgeois hypocrisy. During the next decade, before his gradual incapacitation and death from syphilis, he published nearly 300 stories. Characterized by compact and dramatic narrative lines, they read as modern short stories, eliminating the moral judgments and the long digressions used my many earlier writers. Along with his younger contemporary Anton Chekhov, Maupassant is responsible for technical advances that moved the short story toward an austerity that has marked it ever since.

Life
Print Preview of Section Born at F©camp in Normandy (Normandie) of cultured, middle-class parents, Maupassant was a mediocre student who preferred swimming, boating, and fishing at Etretat, then a newly fashionable resort on the English Channel, to school. His law studies in Paris were interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, which destroyed his family’s fortune and forced Maupassant to find work as a government office clerk. To divert himself from the office work he found tedious, he swam, boated, pursued feminine company at fashionable places, and began to write. French novelist Gustave Flaubert had been a childhood friend of Maupassant’s mother, and in the 1870s he introduced Maupassant to Parisian literary society, then dominated by ‰mile Zola and naturalism. The naturalist movement, led by Zola, emphasized the portrayal of instincts, emotions, and other forces that govern human behavior. Soon Maupassant was a member of the naturalist group, and his story “Boule de suif” (“Ball of Fat”) was published in their

His father, a libertine with a roving disposition, and his mother were legally separated when Guy was still a boy, and he spent a carefree adolescence under the indulgent surveillance of his cultivated mother. When he reached man's estate, the place of his father was to some extent taken by the novelist Gustave Flaubert, who had been a close friend of Madame de Maupassant for many years. Under Flaubert's tutelage, the young Maupassant underwent a strict course of training in the craft of literature, at the same time as he was earning his living in the civil service. He became known to members of the naturalist school and collaborated with Zola and four of his disciples in producing in 1880 a volume of short stories about the Franco-Prussian War entitled
