Literature: W. Somerset Maugham
John Gehl sent us a bio of the British fiction and drama writer W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), "whose writing was popular with readers but not always praised by critics. . Playwriting brought him financial security and, in 1928, he was able to buy the villa on Cape Ferrat in the south of France, which became his permanent home". John Heelan comments : The biography omits that the writer also gained a reputation as a predatory homosexual- but presumably that would be too "yahoo'ish" to mention. RH: Well, it certainly would be ad hominem.

W. Somerset Maugham
W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris as the sixth and youngest son of a solicitor to the British embassy. He learned French as his native language. At the age of 10, Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied medicine in London for six years. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays. Maugham lived in Paris for ten years as a struggling young author. His first novel, Liza of Lambeth appeared in 1897, and drew on his experiences of attending women in childbirth. His first play, A Man of Honor , was produced in 1903. Four of his plays ran simultaneously in London in 1904. Maugham's breakthrough novel was the semi-autobiographical Of Human Bondage (1915), which is usually considered his outstanding achievement. Disguised as a reporter, Maugham worked for the British Intelligence in Russia during the Russian Revolution in 1917, but his stuttering and poor health hindered his career in this field. He then set off with a friend on a series of travels to eastern Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Mexico. His most famous story, which became the play

William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He spent some time at St. Thomas's Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to letters. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915 and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. His fame as a short story writer began with The Trembling of a Leaf, subtitled Little Stories of the South Sea Islands, in 1921, after which he published more than ten collections. In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965.

Quotes of the Day for 25 January 2004 - W. Somerset Maugham
Impropriety is the soul of wit. Beauty is an ecstasy; it is as simple as hunger. There is really nothing to be said about it. It is like the perfume of a rose: you can smell it and that is all. If a nation or an individual values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony is that if it is comfort or money it values more, it will lose that too. Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. And my advice to you is to have nothing whatever to do with it. Excess on occasion is exhilarating. It prevents moderation from acquiring the deadening effect of a habit. It wasn't until late in life that I discovered how easy it is to say 'I don't know.'
