Introduction Uniform titles are used for a variety of purposes. Individual uniform titles are used to bring together in the catalog different manifestations of a work that has been issued under more than one title and to distinguish between different works that have been issued under identical titles. Collective uniform titles are used to provide a common access point for editions of an individual's complete works and for works consisting of selections of an individual's works that lack a distinctive title of their own. Our local policy is to follow Library of Congress policy in creating both individual and collective uniform titles as closely as possible, based on AACR2 chapter 25 (in Cataloger's Desktop ) and the various Library of Congress interpretations of the rules in that chapter . The following is intended to be only a brief summary of the most common cases in which uniform titles are used. Consult the above sources for more detailed guidance. Return to top of page INDIVIDUAL UNIFORM TITLES FOR WORKS CREATED AFTER 1500 (GENERAL) Works issued with variant titles (except revised editions) When a work has appeared under different titles (e.g. British vs. American editions, variant spellings, different wording, etc.) create a uniform title for the work based on the best known version or, lacking that, on the earliest edition. If the different versions are published simultaneously in the same language use the title of the U.S. edition as the uniform title. (Cf. AACR2 25.3)

List Written by W. Somerset Maugham - Performed by Michael Page - Unabridged Fiction - 10 COMPACT DISCS - 11 hours Publisher, Brilliance Audio (June 2005) The Great War changed everything and the years following it were tumultuous - most of all for those who lived the war first-hand. Maugham himself is a character in this novel of self-discovery and search for meaning, but the protagonist is a character named Larry. Battered physically and spiritually by the war, Larry's physical wounds heal, but his spirit is changed almost beyond recognition. He leaves his betrothed, the beautiful and devoted Isabel. He studies philosophy and religion in Paris. He lives as a monk. He witnesses the exotic hardships of Spanish life. All of life that he can find - from an Indian Ashrama to labor in a coal mine - becomes Larry's spiritual experiment as he spurns the comfort and privilege of the Roaring '20's. Maugham's theme is the contrast of spiritual content between Larry and the growing materialism and sophistication of those he left behind - and the surprising irony of where both of those paths lead. About the Author: W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. His best-known novels include

You can find the list here Profile: British novelist, playwright, short-story writer, highest paid author in the world in the 1930s. Despite his popularity, Maugham did not gain serious recognition. This was expressed in his autobiography THE SUMMING UP (1938), that he stood 'in the very first row of the second-raters'. Maugham's skill in handling plot has been compared by critics in the manner of Guy de Maupassant. In many novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in clear, economical style with cynical or resigned undertone. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favor with the intelligentsia. In endeavor to bear my misfortunes with fortitude." (from Creatures of Circumstance, 1947)
W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris as the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy. He learned French as his native tongue. At the age of 10 Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays.

Somerset Maugham bonanza places Special Collections on the cutting edge
by Brian Fitzgerald Each year thousands of scholars troop to Commonwealth Avenue to see the Department of Special Collections' rare books, manuscripts, papers, and other eclectic memorabilia. But a recent acquisition, the papers of W. Somerset Maugham, (Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge) "puts us over that bit of red carpet into the very big time as a repository," says director Howard Gotlieb. Over the past few months Special Collections has also obtained the archives of historian Cecil Woodham-Smith, Oscar-winning actors Jose Ferrer and Robert Donat, and cartoonist Paul Szep, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. They join the personal papers of more than 1,700 public figures in Gotlieb's department, which contains large holdings of such notables as Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franz Liszt, Robert Frost, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, and Ella Fitzgerald. Special Collections has millions of documents, providing an abundance of material for researchers and journalists. The general public can also view selected holdings through an exhibition program: current displays include John Quincy Adams, Bette Davis, Arthur Fiedler, and Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS'55). "The Martin Luther King Papers, which contain 83,000 documents, draws four or five scholars a week," says Gotlieb. "What we have here provides people with direct access to the raw materials of history. A person's papers are his or her most private possessions."
