So right off the bat, I'm thinking here's a guy who I'm reasonably confident doesn't have much to teach me about life. Here is Philip's great epiphany, while sitting in a London park: ...it came to him that the gaping sightseers and the fat strangers with their guide-books, and all those
mean, common people who thronged the shop, with their trivial desires and vulgar cares, were mortal
and must die. they too loved and must part from those they loved, the son from his mother, the wife
from her husband; and perhaps it was more tragic because their lives were ugly and sordid, and they
knew nothing that gave beauty to the world. and so, this warped little man, sitting on his park bench, decides: There was no meaning in life, and man by living served no end. It was immaterial whether he was
born, whether he lived or ceased to live. Life was insignificant and death without consequence.
Philip exulted, as he had exulted in his boyhood when the weight of a belief in God was lifted from

The Moon and Sixpence
Author Info: W. Somerset Maugham
This is one of those books that I find particularly hard to assess. On the one hand, it is eminently, even compulsively, readable. On the other, it is animated by ideas that range from the merely silly to the truly destructive. Maugham announces early on his view of art: ...art is a manifestation of emotion, and emotion speaks a language that all may understand. and the artist: To my mind the most interesting thing in art is the personality of the artist; and if that is singular, I
am willing to excuse a thousand faults. In the first place, the view of art, though wholly consistent with modern understanding, is precisely wrong. Great art is not fundamentally emotional, especially not an expression of the artist's emotions. It is instead intellectual, and what makes it great is that the ideas that it presents are universal and evoke universal emotions. What Maugham is praising is the subjective and the personal in art, that which requires either a visceral reaction devoid of thought or a knowledge of the artist's mood at the time he was working theory or an understanding of the theory he labored under. Tom Wolfe, in his twin works The Painted Word From Bauhaus to Our House (1981)(read Orrin's review ) has done a better job than I ever could of demonstrating that this trend in Modern Art has lead to a point where the artwork itself is superfluous, what matters most is the theory. Similarly, Maugham's attitude seems to be that the artist's personality is more important that the work he produces. It is a short line from this idea to the wretched excesses of artists like Jackson Pollack to the famous for fame's sake nature of someone like Andy Warhol. These people no longer produce Art; they produce their own personalities, then the glitterati and the critics buy their work and inflate it into "art." Along the way they create a truly disturbed cycle of dependency which requires the artist to demonstrate his genius by increasingly aberrant behavior and the patron to demonstrate his appreciation by tolerating or even encouraging that behavior.

Maugham, William Somerset (1874-1965) Frightened by the Oscar Wilde trial, Somerset Maugham avoided treating homosexual themes and characters in his novels and plays. Maugham was an extremely productive writer who both mastered and gained popular success with novels, short stories, and plays. In 1908, he had four plays running simultaneously on the London stage; before he died, his novel Of Human Bondage (1915) had sold over ten million copies; and from Orientations (1899) to Creatures of Circumstances (1947), he was regarded as a master of the well-made short story, especially for stories such as "Rain" and "The Colonel's Lady." Sponsor Message.
Nevertheless, when assessing his long career, Maugham declared that he was "in the very first row of the second-rate." Maugham was born in Paris, the son of the solicitor and legal adviser to the British embassy. Orphaned by the age of ten, he was sent to Whitstable, Kent, to be cared for by his uncle. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, which later received his books, some manuscripts, an endowment, and his ashes; at Heidelberg University, where he did not take a degree; and St. Thomas's Hospital, London. In 1897, he received his medical MRCS and LRCP, but the success of his first novel

to the introduction to the series as read by Rosalind Ayres. English novelist, playwright, master of the short story, and the world’s highest paid author in the 1930s, William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) may best be known for his novel and the film of the same name, Of Human Bondage . Yet his skill in writing short stories is unsurpassed. KCRW (89.9 FM) presents Ten by Maugham , a ten-hour series of short stories written by Maugham, produced in KCRW’s studios in collaboration with Jarvis and Ayres Productions, directed by Rosalind Ayres. Ayres, who among many other distinguished credits appeared as Elsa Lanchester in the award-winning film Gods and Monsters , directs a cast of highly accomplished British actors, including Michael York, Martin Jarvis, Alfred Molina, Carolyn Seymour, Miriam Margolyes, Christopher Neam, Anthony Jay, Kenneth Danziger, Simon Templeman and James Warwick. Music for the series was specially composed by Toby Jarvis and Stuart Hancock of McAsso Music. Executive producer for KCRW is Jacqueline Des Lauriers. It has been said that there is a finish, a neatness, an air of accomplishment about every work of Somerset Maugham’s which ensures a certain quality of pleasure. Maugham’s irony and cool detachment make him an acknowledged master of the short story. He had a wry perception of human weakness and unique talent for evoking a sense of time and place; an acute and often sardonic observation of human foibles and a particular genius for exposing the bitter realities of human relationships. Maugham creates concise dramas played out by unforgettable characters, all of which make for compelling listening.

Creativity

No one can write a best seller by trying to. He must write with complete sincerity; the clichs that make you laugh, the hackneyed characters, the well-worn situations, the commonplace story that excites your derision, seem neither hackneyed, well worn nor commonplace to him. The conclusion is obvious: you cannot write anything that will convince unless you are yourself convinced. The best seller sells because he writes with his heart's blood. Maugham, W. Somerset Books - Bestsellers If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom: and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that, too. Somerset Maugham lived a long time; almost one hundred years. He was young in Queen Victoria's England, when the sun never set on the British Empire, Europe was the center of the civilized world, and the horse drawn carriage was the preferred mode of transportation. He lived to see the collapse of the great colonial empires, the rise of America, and to fly in an airplane. He seems to have taken it all in with his usual phlegmatic demeanor. Bonny Hall was owned by publisher Nelson Doubleday, who resided in the large plantation house. Maugham's workshop was a separate, one-room cabin facing the Combahee River, a hundred feet away from the bigger house (This area is now known as Parker’s Ferry Plantation).

W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris as the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy. He learned French as his native tongue. At the age of 10 Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitestable. Educated at King's School , Canterbury, and Heidelberg University in Germany, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as a doctor from St. Thomas' medical school. He abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays but he studied the craft of writing as assidiously as he had medicine, often writing out passages of other novelists. He never owned a typewriter but wrote everything by hand . He eventually developed a habit of writing four hours each morning. Maugham then lived in Paris for ten years as a struggling young author. In 1897 his first novel, LIZA OF LAMBERT appeared. His first play, A MAN OF HONOUR was produced in 1903. Four of his plays ran simultaneously in London in 1904. Maugham's breakthrough novel was the semi-autobiographical OF HUMAN BONDAGE (1915), which is usually considered his outstanding achievement. It made him the most popular author of his time. Around this time he purchased

November 23 ~  Funny Thing About Life Heart Behind the Hero
"It is a funny t h i n g about life ; if you r e f u s e to accept anything but the b e s t you very often get it." ~ W. Somerset Maugham Versatile British novelist William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) created tales of suspense and irony. With over 20 novels, 25 plays, and 100 short stories, he celebrated the best in storytelling and creativity Imagination grows by exercise," he said. "Contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young." Orphaned at age 10, Maugham was a shy child who spoke with a stutter and used his lonely childhood experiences to create stories with first-person narration. With precision, he wrote his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, during his final year in medical school. Maugham was known for his clear, clean writing style. George Orwell called Maugham his biggest influence and said he"admired (Maugham) immensely for his power of telling a story straightforwardly and without frills." "To write simply is as difficult as to be good," Maugham said. "There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are."
