Average Customer Review: Description Review ?The whole work is distinguished by the variety and impressiveness of its incidents; and the author every-where discovers an imagination rich, powerful, and fervid.? ?Samuel Taylor Coleridge This text refers to the Paperback edition. Inside Flap Copy When Matthew Lewis?s The Monk was published in 1796, readers were shocked by this gripping and horrific novel. Lewis?s story, which drove the House of Commons?of which he was a member?to deem him licentious and perverse, follows the abbot Ambrosio as he is tempted into a world of incest, murder, and torture by a young girl who has concealed herself in his monastery disguised as a boy. As Ambrosio spirals into hell, the reader encounters an array of haunting characters: the innocent virgin, the read more This text refers to the Paperback edition. Set in the sinister monastery of the Capuchins in Madrid, The Monk is a violent tale of ambition, murder, and incest. The great struggle between maintaining monastic vows and fulfilling personal ambitions leads its main character, the monk Ambrosio, to temptation and the breaking of his vows, then to sexual obsession and rape, and finally to murder in order to conceal his guilt. The only edition of this key gothic novel available, The Monk now offers a new introduction and notes that make it especially accessible to the modern reader.

Average Customer Review: Description First published pseudonymously in 1764, The Castle of Otranto purported to be a translation of an Italian story of the time of the crusades. In it Walpole attempted, as he declared in the Preface to the Second Edition, "to blend the two kinds of romance: the ancient and the modern." Crammed with invention, entertainment, terror, and pathos, the novel was an immediate success and Walpole's own favorite among his numerous works. The novel is reprinted here from a text of 1798, the last that Walpole himself prepared for the press. ... Customer Reviews (26) A good but not brilliant ancestor of gothic stories This is considered to be the first gothic story and it does set up many of the classic elements in terms of being in an old castle, the supernatural and some kind of old mystery that haunts the place and must be resolved. However, it is quite hard to read as the writing is extremely dense - too much to be enjoyed fully as a gothic novel. It's great historical value but in terms of enjoyment, this has the density of a much more serious work without the profoundness.
