Chapter Five
The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914
T he U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) between the industrial North and the agricultural, slave-owning South was a watershed in American history. The innocent optimism of the young democratic nation gave way, after the war, to a period of exhaustion. American idealism remained but was rechanneled. Before the war, idealists championed human rights, especially the abolition of slavery; after the war, Americans increasingly idealized progress and the self-made man. This was the era of the millionaire manufacturer and the speculator, when Darwinian evolution and the "survival of the fittest" seemed to sanction the sometimes unethical methods of the successful business tycoon. From 1860 to 1914, the United States was transformed from a small, young, agricultural ex-colony to a huge, modern, industrial nation. A debtor nation in 1860, by 1914 it had become the world's wealthiest state, with a population that had more than doubled, rising from 31 million in 1860 to 76 million in 1900. By World War I, the United States had become a major world power. As industrialization grew, so did alienation. Characteristic American novels of the period Stephen Crane's

Illinois State Library tracer(" > ", "home.html","tracergrey","smblack","smblack"); AUTHORS ON THE ILLINOIS STATE LIBRARY
The writers reflect the rich diversity of Illinois literature, ranging from Edna Ferber and Ernest Hemingway to Studs Terkel and Gwendolyn Brooks. They include poets, such as Edgar Lee Masters; former newspaper reporters, such as Ben Hecht; contemporary writers, such as Saul Bellow; a Sauk Indian, Black Hawk; and a United States President, Abraham Lincoln. There are those who brought social change, such as Jane Addams, whose book Twenty Years at Hull House , describes her life as founder of the Chicago-based social agency that was one of the first in the nation to care for the indigent. There is Robinson native James Jones, whose novels From Here to Eternity The Front Page, that describes the halcyon days of Chicago journalism in the 1920s. There is the futurist science-fiction works of Waukegan’s Ray Bradbury and the "big shoulder" of Galesburg’s Carl Sandburg. Regardless of the type of writing each engaged, they all have a place in American literature and Illinois history.

Dust to dust
A literary American songwriter, Richard Buckner wrestles with the meaning of death.
by Mike Mcgonigal
(Darcy Hemley)
RICHARD BUCKNER IS a burly, California-bred, thirtysomething singer-songwriter with a knack for describing all the shades of every shadow on the dark side of the street. As a musical stylist, he is kin to such boundary-pushing folkies as Richard Thompson, Tim Buckley, Townes van Zandt, and Astral Weeks -era Van Morrison. Really. Everyone lumps him in with the alt-dot-country crowd, but he's not such an easy collar. Buckner has collaborated with members of Tortoise and Gastr Del Sol, and the way he makes his husky voice do these weird, intricate, controlled loop-dee-loops is as much Jeff Mangum or whirling dervish dude as it is George Jones or Appalachian mountain folk.

Veteran's Day Other people said it better: In Flanders Field the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. "In Flanders Field," John McCrae Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.
