Prior to their removal and near annihilation by the white man, the Sauk were one of the proudest and most advanced tribes on the North American continent. Iola Fuller succeeds in re-creating the daily life at Saukenuk, the village shared by the Sauk and Fox nations, during the twelve years prior to the Black Hawk War. She deals kindly with her subjects, writing sympathetically of Chief Black Hawk and his unflagging efforts to remain at peace with the white man and still maintain dominion over the land of his fathers. She gives a factual account of the Black Hawk War, in which a small band of determined Indians under the leadership of Black Hawk wage guerrilla warfare in a futile effort to save their homes. She writes of the faith of the Indians which leads them to believe in the coming of a kind of Messiah who will deliver them from the white man's oppression. The success of The Shining Trail lies in the author's genuine understanding and sympathy for the Indian and the intimacy with which she tells his story.

E-Mail Edgar Lee Masters Great Great Grandson of Hillery Masters by Charles E. Burgess This compilation of generations of Masters families is an appropriate setting for acknowledging the career of one controversial member who made the name internationally famous in literature. Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950) was strongly influenced by ancestral lore in his epic Spoon River Anthology (1915) and in many other writings more than 50 books, in all. The sweep of the nation's history and migrations permeated his books and articles although most of them were focused in the Central Illinois country where he grew to manhood. At its best, his poetry and prose communicate universal emotions and observations typical of many locales in many time periods. Spoon River , still in print, was a sensation a book of poetry that sold like a popular novel. In brief free-verse monologues called epitaphs, supposedly spoken from their graves, its characters summarized their lives in (and occasionally beyond) an Illinois village. Many spoke of positive and noble existences, particularly those drawn from Masters' pioneer ancestral lore. However, the book's notoriety certainly came chiefly because it incisively touched about every vice, sin, crime and meanness that can develop in human relationships. The book was assailed from many quarters, championed ardently from others. Many critics believe

REH to H.P. Lovecraft, ca. February 1931: "My antipathy for Rome is one of those things I can't explain myself. Certainly it isn't based on any early reading, because some of that consisted of MacCauley's 'Lays of Ancient Rome' from which flag-waving lines I should have drawn some Roman patriotism, it seems. At an early age I memorized most of those verses, but in reciting, changed them to suit myself and substituted Celtic names for the Roman ones, and changed the settings from Italy to the British Isles!" Literature Slam #2
I have chosen to be in a group for our second literature slam that consists of the following people: Nabila Uddin Katie Aikins Linda Fondrk , and Se-Ann Williams . We have met several times and have finally decided after long deliberations that we would like to do what is called The Spoon River Anthropology by Edgar Lee Masters . The poems that we have all chose were published in the year 1916. The group chose five individual poems and one group poem to present to the entire class. The following short poems will be presented by my group members. The Hill (This poem will be done by the entire group. It is a longer poem and we decided that it would be something different to use all of our abilities to present the poem in five different ways. We are just hoping that it all goes well!!) The MacMillan Company: New York. Robert Fulton Tanner (Katie Aikins) Cassius Hueffer (Nabila Uddin) We had the hardest time as a group deciding which poem we would like to present together. I wondered exactly why this was but after evaluating the individuals in my group I decided that we all had a personal type of poem that we all favored more than others. After discovering this, we all decided that the poem “

CITIES AND TOWNS AND PRAIRIES Essay by Sandra Olivetti Martin
Read the great writers from anywhere; take your pick. No doubt you'd be wowed at the literary achievement of New York, Texas or even Alaska. But Illinois, I can tell you, is special. Illinois is the state of divine inspiration. Our writers are life-struck lovers, effervescent over what nature or God or humankind hath wrought. They are street-corner preachers, climbing onto their soapboxes to broadcast the apocalypse. They are somber realists, anguished existentialists, conscientious reformers and thrilled lyricists. Regardless of color, creed or sex, of national origin, of outlook pessimistic or optimistic, Illinois writers sing as irrepressibly as canaries, pouring out their faith in a world perfectible. If only they can find the right word. Consider the words of Donald Culross Peattie, prefacing his 1935 biography of naturalist John James Audubon, Singing in the Wilderness: "I wanted to tell of him as all Americans love to tell each other Lincoln stories. Our listeners have usually heard them before but even so, we cannot hold them in; they let something escape from our hearts into the open; they let the winged best of us free."

The writers reflect the rich diversity of Illinois literature, ranging from Edna Ferber and Ernest Hemingway to Studs Terkel and Gwendolyn Brooks. They include poets, such as Edgar Lee Masters; former newspaper reporters, such as Ben Hecht; contemporary writers, such as Saul Bellow; a Sauk Indian, Black Hawk; and a United States President, Abraham Lincoln. There are those who brought social change, such as Jane Addams, whose book Twenty Years at Hull House , describes her life as founder of the Chicago-based social agency that was one of the first in the nation to care for the indigent. There is Robinson native James Jones, whose novels From Here to Eternity The Front Page, that describes the halcyon days of Chicago journalism in the 1920s. There is the futurist science-fiction works of Waukegan’s Ray Bradbury and the "big shoulder" of Galesburg’s Carl Sandburg. Regardless of the type of writing each engaged, they all have a place in American literature and Illinois history.
