    Excerpt
    O my country, may you not be judged by your travelling children! Ella W. Thompson, Beaten Paths American Bookseller as "an extremely lively story of an extremely lively American girl living in Rome" ("New Books" 52), the narrative tells of a vivacious young woman who sparks first the affections and then the suspicions of a well-heeled American youth who observes with puzzlement and dismay her unbecoming conduct toward an unsuitable Italian rival. Conscious that the nouvelle 's racy portrayal of the American girl abroad might vex its domestic audience, the

    A DREAM OF ITALY. AN ALLEGORY INTRODUCING "MAE MADDEN." I. We two had been parted, God pity us, when
    The stars were unnamed and when heaven was dim;
    We two had been parted far back on the rim
    And the outermost border of heaven's red bars:
    We two had been parted ere the meeting of men
    Or God had set compass on spaces as yet. We two had been parted ere God had set His finger to spinning the spaces with stars, And now, at the last in the gold and set Of the sun of Venice, we two had met. II. Where the lion of Venice, with brows afrown, With tossed mane tumbled, and teeth in air, Looks out in his watch o'er the watery town, With a paw half lifted, with his claws half bare, By the blue Adriatic, in the edge of the sea, I saw her. I knew her, but she knew not me. I had found her at last! Why, I had sailed The antipodes through, had sought, had hailed

    Both CNU teams in hunt for conference titles Friday, October 17th, 2003
    WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The Christopher Newport University men's and women's cross country team head into tomorrow's Mason-Dixon Conference Meet in Williamsburg with high aspirations and hopes for their teams and individuals. Freshmen Cary Chaffee and senior Aimee Gibbs both appear to be the individual race favorites in the men's 8K and women's 6K races to be held on the Eastern State Hospital grounds. Chaffee with his season best time of 25:38.62 coming in his last race at the Paul Short Invitational, not only has the best time in the conference, but the fastest clocking in the entire region. His closest competitor appears to be fellow freshmen teammate Brandon Miles, who is nearly half a minute behind Chaffee at a 26:06.19 season best. Other individuals figured to be contesting for the individual title include Salisbury University's Tristan Gilbert (26:07 season best) and Mary Washington College's Matt Kirk (27:06 season best). Gibbs, last year's Mason-Dixon Conference runner-up, is the pre-race favorite with her season 6K best time of 22:31.3. Last year's champion, Erin Connelly of Mary Washington College, returns, but has yet to return to her championship winning form after suffering a injury last track season. Catholic's Rachel Yates with a 19:57 5K season best, figures to be in the mix for the crown as well.

    "Away from everything and everybody we know. I do really think it is like dying,don't you, Mr. Mann?" Mae turned abruptly and faced the young man by her side. Halcyone She climbed through and stole along the orchard and up to the house. Signs of mending were around the windows, in the shape of a new board here and there in the shutters; but nothing further. Elizabeth Visits America If I had known how Harry was going to behave to me over such a simple thing as the Vicomte's letter, I could never have let you take the children with you to Arcachon for these next months I am feeling so lonely. The Reason Why "Yes, Francis, my friend, the game here is played out; I am thirty, and there is nothing interesting left for me to do but emigrate to Canada, for a while at least, and take up a ranch."

    Submitted by Cameron McEwen - mcewen@nlx.com There is no known true passenger list for this vessel, but there are many records which show people who arrived on P.E.I. aboard the Mary Kennedy. Cameron has gone through Skye Pioneers and Hebridean Pioneers, by Malcolm MacQueen, and picked out all references to passengers who arrived aboard the vessel. As a further check on those found there, he has cross referenced those passages to information found in later censuses of the lot. As further information is found from other sources, this list will be updated.

They left their native place about 6 weeks ago in a ship for Cape Breton, along with a number of settlers for that Island. They all seem to be in high health and judging from appearance, in easy circumstances. With prudent foresight characteristic of their race they came provided with 12 months of provisions and an ample stock of warm clothing. They all have relatives already settled on the Island chiefly about Belfast, and with the exception of one family it is, we understand, their intention also to settle in that thriving settlement.
