Sonnets
Long long ago, when all the glittering earth
Was heaven itself, when drunkards in the street
Were like mazed kings shaking at giving birth
To acts of war that sickle men like wheat,
When the white clover opened Paradise
And God lived in a cottage up the brook,
Beauty, you lifted up my sleeping eyes
And filled my heart with longing with a look;
And allhe day I searched but could not find
The beautiful dark-eyed who touched me there,
Delight in her made trouble in my mind,
She was within all Naure, everywhere,
The breath I breathed, the brook, the flower, the grass,
Were her, her word, her beauty, all she was.
Night came again, but now I could not sleep.
The owls were watching in the yew, the mice
Gnawed at the wainscot; the mid dark was deep,
The death-watch knocked the dead man's summons thrice.
The cats upon the pointed housetops peered
About the chimneys, with lit eyes which saw

John Masefield
(1878-1967) - British poet and author John Edward Masefield rose to prominence during the first two decades of the 20th century. He is best known for his narrative poems, particularly his poems of the sea, such as Salt-Water Ballads , and for his long narrative poems, such as The Everlasting Mercy , which shocked the literary establishment with its phrases of a colloquial coarseness previously unknown in 20th-century English verse. Educated at King's School, Warwick, Masefield was apprenticed aboard a windjammer that sailed around Cape Horn. He left the sea after that voyage and spent several years living precariously in the United States working at odd jobs. His work there in a carpet factory is described in his autobiography, In the Mill . In the summer of 1897 he returned to Egngland were he became friendly with John Millington Synge and William Butler Yeats, who would have a profound influence on Masefield. Masefield's writing career really took off with a job as a journalist for the

My influences included William Butler Yeats Poet, novelist, dramatist and journalist, John Masefield's literary career was rich and varied, and although his reputation waned in later years, he is again being recognized for his wide range, encompassing ballads, nature poetry and mythological narrative, and for his attempt to make poetry a popular art.
Masefield was born in the town of Ledbury, surrounded by beautiful countryside in the region of Herefordshire, England, on June 1, 1878. This picturesque area, located near the border of Wales, was described by Masefield as his ‘ Paradise ’. As a young boy, Masefield was able to roam his nearby countryside, delighting in watching the ships moving up and down the local canal; wandering alone through the meadows and woods; and taking an interest in and observing the beauty of the natural flora and fauna of the area.

John Masefield was born on June 1st 1878 in a house, 'The Knapp', which means a little hill dwarfed by higher ground. It had recently been built on the northern edge of Ledbury near to the Hereford and Gloucester Canal which was operational until rendered obsolete with the opening of the railway in the early 1880's. John's maternal grandparents were from Great Comberton near to Bredon Hill and the Avon in Worcestershire where his grandfather, Revd Charles Hubert Parker, was rector. Grandpa Parker had shown a talent for pen-and-ink drawings of churches during his youth as an Oxford undergraduate. He devoted himself to his parish for fifty-seven years where he helped to restore the church, putting up new cottages, and keeping up the schoolhouse . He had a great influence on John, manifesting itself in the biblical language and allusions that were to enter his writings later on. John maintained throughout his life that as a child he had lived in paradise. He often described places, people and events that filled his memory amongst the meadows, orchards, woodlands and hoplands of Herefordshire.

We were schooner rigged and rakish with a long and lissome hull
And we flew the pretty colors of the crossbones and the skull. We had a big black Jolly Rodger flapping grimly at the fore.
And we sailed the Spanish water in the happy days of yore. We had a long brass gun amidship like a well conducted ship
We each had a brace of pistols and a cutlass at the hip.
