John Masefield (1878-1967)
John Edward Masefield was born in Herefordshire, England. His idyllic childhood was shattered by the premature death of his mother in 1885 and father in 1891. Thereafter, Masefield and his siblings were entrusted to the guardianship of a domineering aunt. Though exhibiting literary pretensions and no little talent, his new guardian determined that he enrol in the Merchant Marine. Masefield's maiden voyage to Chile in 1894, aged only 15, proved disastrous. His constitution had always been weak: too weak, indeed, to suffer a 32-day storm off Cape Horn that he had to endure. Depleted in strength, he became gravely ill soon after arrival and was deemed unfit to continue duty. He was returned to England via the Panama isthmus. Masefield's aunt, however, insisted that he continue in the service. Against his wishes, he sailed for New York in the spring of 1895. It was his final voyage as, on arrival, Masefield resigned. He did not return to England until 1897: this American adventure was revelatory as, while there, he committed himself to a literary vocation. On returning to London he met and formed an enduring friendship with W. B. Yeats, and began the prolific literary output that would characterise the rest of his life.

Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq Borrowing a leaf from Thomas, I'll run a set of three sea poems this week, beginning with what is doubtless the most famous of them all ... Sea Fever I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. John Masefield
John Masefield is buried in 'Poets' Corner', Westminster Abbey, London. (See map...ref no. 16) Masefield's idyllic country childhood was shattered when he was orphaned at an early age. He was cared for by an unsympathetic aunt who sent him to sea at the age of thirteen to curtail his interest in literature. At the age of seventeen, while on his second Atlantic crossing, he deserted ship in America to pursue his love of writing.
Burial Stone of John Masefield
Photograph by Kieran Smith Two of Masefield's most famous poems were undoubtedly influenced by his experiences at sea - namely Sea Fever and Cargoes. After the death of his wife in 1960 Masefield became a virtual recluse. He died in Abingdon, Oxfordshire on 12 May, 1967 after contracting gangrene following an injury to his leg. Masefield was Poet Laureate from 1930 to 1967. He was the last poet to be interred in 'Poets' Corner' Quinquireme of Ninevah from distant Ophir Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine

"Beauty"
I have seen dawn and sunset on moors and windy hills
Coming in solemn beauty like slow old tunes of Spain:
I have seen the lady April bringing the daffodils,
Bringing the springing grass and the soft warm April rain.
I have heard the song of the blossoms and the old chant of the sea,
And seen strange lands from under the arched white sails of ships;
But the loveliest things of beauty God ever has showed to me
Are her voice, and her hair, and eyes, and the dear red curve of her lips.
