Gabriel Foigny (1650-1692).
Les Avantures de Jacques Sadeur dans la Decouverte et le Voyage de la Terre Australe . Amsterdam: D. Mortier, 1732. Originally published at Geneva in 1676, this tale is among the best known of all the accounts of Terra Australis. It is a fantastic mixture of the marvelous and the realistic, and was intended as a criticism of Christian tradition. Denis Vairasse (1665-1681).
L'Histoire des Sevarambes, Peuples qui Habitent une Partie du Troisieme Continent Communement Appele La Terre Australe. .. Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1715. First published in Paris in 1677-79, Vairasse's fictitious account of the strange land and people encountered by voyagers after being blown far south off course was reprinted many times, including an English translation that was published in 1727 as Part III of Gulliver's Travels . Both these tales belong to that genre of fictitious narratives purporting to be truthful accounts of voyages made by Europeans to then little known lands. Based upon realistic detail they were intended as satires or criticisms of the existing state of society. Raymond W. Kirkbride Memorial Fund

As European settlements in the Americas spread, so too did the boundaries of exploration for ethnographers, natural scientists and adventurers. The boundaries were pushed both north and west (see, for instance, Henry Ellis' A Voyage to Hudson's-Bay in 1748, and George Kendall's in 1847). By the nineteenth-century many North American cities were becoming desirable tourist destinations not only for American leisure travelers, but also for visitors from abroad, as the number of guidebooks and travelers' accounts pertaining to America attests. Information Lyrics This broadside was a favorite with sailors. It is also known as Will Watch, the Bold Smuggler . Whall dates this version to circa 1820. Whall notes that the song is cited by Frederick Marryat in his works (1792-1848). Whall also found a version of Will Watch in an American Songbook.* According to Gale Huntington, the sequel to Will Watch (a reply by the young woman) is documented in the 1847 log of the ship Cortez Rev. S. Baring-Gould collected several versions of the song and it appears in numerous broadside catalogues.*** Several of these broadsides can be found at the Bodleian Library One morn when the wind
from the northward blew keenly,
While sullenly roared
the big waves of the main,
A famed smuggler, Will Watch,
kissed his Sue, then serenely
Took helm, and to sea
boldy steered out again. Will had promised his Sue that this trip, if well ended, Should coil up his ropes, and he'd anchor to shore; When his pockets were lined, why his life should be mended

12634.t.18 16.5x19 cm Captain Marryat (1792-1848) spent an adventurous youth at sea during the Napoleonic Wars before returning home to write naval adventures for adults and children, and the first historical books for children. The Children of the New Forest , his last completed work, is set during the English Civil War, and tells the story of the orphaned children of a colonel in the King's army, who are secretly cared for by an old servant until they are able to regain their inheritance at the Restoration. The frontispiece showing the burning of Arnwood, the children's family home, is by Frank Marryat, the author's son.

IDEAS BEHIND THE WRITING OF THE CREATIVE NONFICTION NOVEL STRANGE OBJECTS
Gary Crew
By 1988 I had written two novels for teenagers. I was not especially proud of them and wanted to stretch my literary wings. Still, in spite of my personal dissatisfaction, they had done very well, so I was pleased when Heinemann asked for another. I agreed, but put to Heinemann that I would like to try something that came up out of history; something that might link to my doctorate on post-colonial fiction. I was focusing on a comparative study of the fiction of the Caribbean author Wilson Harris and the Australian Patrick White. (I never did finish it.) My publisher said 'Go right ahead,' so I did. I made several decisions before starting. Since I was already known in the youth fiction field, I decided to stay with that audience and genre for the sake of sales and promotion. Having taught both ancient and modern history in high school, I knew that teenagers generally hated History and worse, knew virtually nothing about it. I was also familiar with what was known as 'fictionally reconstructed history' which in children's literature went right back to The Children of the New Forest . Even I hated this genre with all its terrible quoth he's and saith she's - not to mention its inherent didacticism and stilted costume-drama prose.

Capt. Marryat Diary 1837 Captain Frederick Marryat [1792-1848] was a widely read English novelist whose speciality was sea stories. In his Forward to Diary in America Jules Zanger notes: "Of all the literary lions who have made their progress through the drawing-rooms and backwoods of America...perhaps the most tactless and blundering was Captain Frederick Marryat." Marryat was in Detroit July 28, and August 12, 1837. Left Detroit in the Michigan steam-vessel for Mackinaw. . . . Detroit. There are some pleasant people in this town, and the society is quite equal to that of the eastern cities. From the constant change and transition which take place in this country, go where you will you are sure to fall in with a certain portion of intelligent, educated people. This is not the case in the remoter portions of the Old Continent, where every thing is settled, and generation succeeds generation, as in some obscure country town. But in America, where all is new, and the country has to be peopled from the other parts, there is a proportion of intelligence and education transplanted with the inferior classes, either from the Eastern States or from the Old World, in whatever quarter you may happen to find yourself.

      Abstract:
Aphorism, maxim, witticism, dictum and other short expressions have no clear definition and have been little studied. The present essay initiates a study in terms of genre, where short forms are considered (in Bakhtin's spirit) in terms of their sense of experience. In particular, this essay contrasts the aphorism (as practiced by Lao Tzu, Pascal, Tolstoy, and Wittgenstein) in contrast to the dictum (Bentham, Marx, Descartes, Leibniz). The dictum banishes the darkness, but the aphorism probes what it knows cannot ultimately be known: it is mystical. Jameson, Fredric.
