By Linda Lin It is a sad love story in New York City, 1870. Newland Archer was a restrained young attorney who was engaged to the lovely but conventional aristocrat, May. Then May's scandalous cousin, Ellen, who was just back from France, came into his life. Ellen had such a reputation because she couldn't stand her brutal husband and left him, running off with his secretary. In New York society of the time, such behavior was not acceptable.

Advice: Dear Alicia: I am truly surprised by your question but since you asked me, here is my answer. I would cancel the black-tie affair and cut off all contact with him abruptly. It is the only way he will miss you and realize what a fool he has been. One of the reasons he may not want to cut it off completely with you is that if it doesn't work out with this other woman, he still has you to come back to. How convenient for him. If he feels that he may lose you while he is deciding, then maybe he will speed up the process.
About the Author: For the past 20 years, Dr. Ellen has educated, motivated, and inspired thousands of men and women on how to put fun, romance, excitement and communication in their relationships. Through humor and personal experiences, she is able to captivate and relate to any type of audience, the dynamics of building a solid foundation for a more rewarding life. Through her audio cassettes, CD's, seminars, videos and books she has been teaching and communicating her message to men and women of all ages throughout the world. All of her efforts are designed to work together to achieve one ultimate goal: strengthen the fun, love and communication between two people. She has been happily married for 34 years, has three grown children and two grandchildren. Ellen Kreidman, Ph.D

Rule #1: I deally, The Rules for Marriage Assuming you have a ring and a reasonable wedding date, what are the rules for the engagement period and wedding? These concerns are fairly common. The dynamics of a relationship can change dramatically when you go from dating to being engaged and planning the wedding. It is tempting to change your behavior-to call him all the time, to lose interest in yourself, your work, your friends, and just about everything else-because, after all, you are practically married. All of a sudden, you think The Rules are over. This is a mistake. A man may get overwhelmed if he suddenly sees and/or hears from you morning, noon, and night. It's not like he's going to break the engagement, but he starts to miss his freedom and wants space (going out with the guys, working late) and then you get hurt. If you continue to do The Rules , this will not happen. We don't recommend living together, as we said in

    Rule #1: Relax During the
    Engagement and Wedding I
deally, The Rules for Marriage Assuming you have a ring and a reasonable wedding date, what are the rules for the engagement period and wedding? Every month we receive calls, letters, and e-mail saying, "Thanks. I'm so happy!" But we also get letters like this one: "Now that I'm engaged, we're fighting all the time. I feel him pulling back. I'm acting needy. What should I do?" Or like this one: "How often should I see him now that I'm engaged? Do I stick to the three-day-a-week rule and ten-minute phone calls?" The Rules are over. This is a mistake. A man may get overwhelmed if he suddenly sees and/or hears from you morning, noon, and night. It's not like he's going to break the engagement, but he starts to miss his freedom and wants space (going out with the guys, working late) and then you get hurt. If you continue to do The Rules, this will not happen. We don't recommend living together, as we said in The Rules

The future 28th first lady was born in Savannah, Georgia, on May 15, 1860, and lived most of her childhood in Rome, Georgia An extremely bright but shy girl, Ellie Lou, as she was known, read widely and even taught herself trigonometry. She graduated from Rome's Female College, and was recognized for her artistic ability. At eighteen, she won a bronze medal for freehand drawing at the Paris International Exposition, and launched a promising career as a professional artist. A few years later, when her mother died and her father suffered a severe mental breakdown, Ellen's plans for a career as an artist were derailed. Her siblings looked to Ellen as the head of their suddenly parentless household.
    Woodrow Wilson
then a lawyer, came into Ellen's life when he visited Rome on business and they met at church. A cousin once said that if Ellen ever married, the man would probably be of no consequence, since smart men were rarely interested in smart women. But Woodrow Wilson was eager for the love and support of a strong woman like Ellen. Almost immediately engaged, the couple waited to marry for two years because both had decided to continue their studies. Woodrow entered graduate school, while Ellen, whose father had died while confined to a mental asylum, used money from her modest inheritance to restart her study of art at the innovative Art Students' League in New York City. After marriage, Ellen devoted herself to her family and to Woodrow's career, garnering private praise as her husband's intellectual equal.

There are many books available for purchase online about the Life and Work of Ellen G. White. Steps to Christ, has been published in more than 140 languages. Seventh-day Adventists believe that Mrs. White was more than a gifted writer; they believe she was appointed by God as a special messenger to draw the world's attention to the Holy Scriptures and help prepare people for Christ's second advent. From the time she was 17 years old until she died 70 years later, God gave her approximately 2,000 visions and dreams. The visions varied in length from less than a minute to nearly four hours. The knowledge and counsel received through these revelations she wrote out to be shared with others. Thus her special writings are accepted by Seventh-day Adventists as inspired, and their exceptional quality is recognized even by casual readers. As stated in

By Ellen Goodman Saturday, November 13, 2004; Page A29 BOSTON Here it is, just days after the red states gave their presidential seal of approval to the man from Texas, and we've already been treated to another skirmish in the culture wars. The Texas Board of Education has now given its educational seal of approval to what may soon be dubbed Red Sex Ed. The big news is the state's successful demand that textbook publishers change the description of marriage between "two people" to marriage between "a man and a woman." They also ordered that marriage be defined as "a lifelong union between a husband and a wife." Today's Op-Eds
