Faith, the Fourth, and gay marriage
July 4, 2004 IT'S JUST days before the wedding, and Dorothy Austin is on her cellphone trying to track down a Dixieland band to lead the procession from Harvard's Memorial Church to the Lowell House yard. ADVERTISEMENT The odds of finding a band for the Fourth of July are getting longer by the minute. But they are nothing compared to the odds against marriage that she and Diana Eck faced 28 years ago when they first met. Now the table in Lowell House, the student residence where this pair have been co-masters for nearly a decade, is covered with place cards. As she moves the cards in search of the perfect seating arrangement for 400 guests, Diana laughs, "We're the brides, the mothers of the brides, and the wedding planners rolled into one." Dorothy was in her car on Nov. 18 when Diana called and said, "The court just ruled in our favor. We can get married." "We never thought we'd see this in our lifetime," they both say. So it's no wonder that this couple chose the Fourth of July for their wedding date and planned to end the ceremony singing "my country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty." Same-sex wedding bells have been ringing all over this state since they became legal on May 18. They enrage some Americans and engage others in celebrations. Yet there's been a shared assumption that this debate pits the more devout against the less devout, the religious against the secular.

Same-Sex Marriage

BOSTON Now that we have celebrated the paper anniversary of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, may we pause for a moment to admit that the opponents were right: Same-sex marriage is proof of a crisis in traditional marriage. But gay marriage is not the cause of the crisis, it's a consequence. The true culprit is, well, Cupid. What's Love Got to Do With It? Precisely. Until roughly two centuries ago, the institution of marriage was considered far too important to leave up to the emotions of two people. Marriage was about economics and politics and more than anything else, about creating new in-laws. To see how far we've strayed from the rule of in-laws to the rule of love, just compare the 16th-century "Romeo and Juliet" to the 21st-century forgive me, Will "Shrek 2." In our modern fairy tales, a father is expected to support a love match even if his daughter marries an ogre. Any mother who interferes is a "Monster-in-Law." As Stephanie Coontz points out in her lively new book, "Marriage, A History," at some point, "love conquered marriage."

At the time of the abduction, Turner was a High Sheriff of Cheshire and they lived in Shrigley Hall, near Macclesfield . Even at the age of fifteen, Ellen was one of the most eligible heiresses and in February 1827 attracted interest of Edward Gibbon Wakefield , who begun to conspire with his brother William to get his hands on her inheritance. Wakefield had in his previous life eloped with a daughter of Indian civil servant and her parents had eventually accepted the marriage (the wife had died years before). He apparently based his plan on similar expectations. At March 7 , Wakefield sent a carriage and a servant Edward Thevenot to Ellen's boarding school in Liverpool with a message to Mrs Daulby, the mistress of the school, where he claimed that William Turner had become paralyzed and wished to see his daughter immediately. Mrs Daulby was initially suspicious of the fact that she did not recognize Thevenot but eventually let Ellen go.

A.S. Byatt's Possession : A Critique of the Victorian Omission of Sexuality
Timothy Farrell '97 (English 168, 1996)
Like the narratives of Graham Swift and Peter Carey that function to subvert Victorian notions of progress and religion, A.S. Byatt's Possession: A Romance questions a dominant Victorian constructionfemale sexuality. Possession is a novel about a pair of young scholars who trace the correspondence between a well-known male Victorian poet and a lesser-known female poet. The novel is a patchwork of letters, poetry, and narrative. In her depiction of the Victorian past, Byatt recognizes Victorian culture's elision of all discourse surrounding sexuality. Byatt depicts Victorian marriagerepresented by the poet Randolph Ash and his wife Ellenin the same way a Victorian would have represented it, as evacuated of sexuality. Yet one of Byatt's projects in Possession is to valorize the sexual act itself. To accomplish this, she must look outside of Victorian culture to find a way of representing the sexual act. In her representation of Randolph Ash's marriage to Ellen, Byatt follows the Victorian tradition of displacing the sexual act from the marriage relationship. We learn that Ellen Ash marries Randolph after she has already lost her youth, implying that she has also lost her sexual attractiveness. She thinks back on her life, "A young girl of twenty-four should not be made to wait for marriage until she is thirty-six and her flowering is over" (499). Her memory of her wedding night reveals her terror over the sexual act.

The Status of Family Issues at the United Nations By Ellen Sauerbrey
I always feel when I'm being introduced as a representative of the United Nations that I have to say I'm a conservative; I'm not a feminist. I served 16 years in the legislature in the State of Maryland, and it was great preparation. I was the minority leader in the State of Maryland for eight of those years. It was a great preparation for service in the U.N. because, as an American, I can tell you I feel very much in the minority. It's a tough arena to work in.
This is not the vision that most Americans share. It is certainly not the vision that I hear at the U.N. from the Muslim countries, from many of the African countries. But it's a vision that we are dealing with constantly.
Now my vision about families, and about the importance of family, is at least partly formed by the 16 years that I did serve in the Maryland legislature. And during that time, what I learned very clearly was that every social ill that we were dealing with stemmed from children who were the product of broken homes. Seventy percent of the people incarcerated in our prisons are fatherless, from homes without fathers. As we heard this morning, you name it: drug addictions, school dropout, alcoholism, teenage suicide, teenage pregnancy, early sexual encounters … all of these things much more highly associated with children that grow up in homes without parents. We worry about poverty, and yet we forget that the feminization of poverty comes from the fact that so many women are trying to support children with the absence of a father in the home.

TOM: Sue Ellen likes to introduce me as her first and third husband because it freaks people out. I can see why some people might think it’s weird, but for me, I am so grateful to God that I have the privilege of being her husband today. A marriage with God in it is so different from one without, and we had to learn this the hard way, after much pain, difficulty and tears. But let me first tell you how it all started and Sue Ellen can fill in the parts I miss, or tell what it was really like. In the beginning… TOM: Sue Ellen and I went to university together and started dating at a very young age. She hates it when I say this, but she was probably the best looking girl in Saskatoon. She was even in the Miss Canada pageant! She was a beautiful woman and still is today. Our work careers started out and I stumbled into the healthcare field, through the finance area, and then I bluffed my way into being the CEO of a healthcare organization. That organization merged with two other ones into a new organization and I was named one of the 50 best bosses in Canada by

      Steve Sanders: DOMA Is Unconstitutional
Writing in the National Law Journal , ACS Member Steve Sanders suggests a hypothetical case which would render the Defense of Marriage Act Unconstitutional: Sandra and Ellen marry in Massachusetts. A few months later, their car is hit by a truck on a Massachusetts highway. Sandra is killed. Ellen sues the driver's employer, a freight company headquartered in Indianapolis, for wrongful death. After trial, the Massachusetts court awards a money judgment. But to collect against the defendant's assets, Ellen must carry the judgment to Indiana and ask a court there to domesticate it. Like 39 other states, Indiana outlaws same-sex marriage. The defendant invokes the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which says that no state is "required to give effect to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding" respecting another state's same-sex marriage "or a right or claim arising from such relationship." Based on DOMA's plain language, the Indiana court turns Ellen away. The tort judgment she received in her home state becomes worthless. As Sanders explains, such a case would place Indiana at odds with the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the Constitution:

Why is marriage like closing your eyes and picking your future out of a hat? By Editor of NY Times Wedding Pages Vows Column Lois Brady Smith. Life's Big Ricochet: From Wedding to Marriage
By LOIS SMITH BRADY REPORTING on weddings is perhaps the only job where you learn almost nothing about the subject matter, not even after many years. In the nine years since I began the Vows column on the Weddings pages, I have learned only a handful of things. I now know how to recognize hydrangeas. I know that a reporter should never eat at a wedding because it makes guests mistrust you — they believe you are there for an ulterior motive, like filling up on that caviar flown in from Russia on a private jet. I now know to be wary of bridesmaids, who have the temperaments of bumblebees. The one time I was kicked out of a wedding, it was by a swarm of bridesmaids who felt I was being nosy. I've also learned that everyone has a different way of knowing when a relationship is right — and most of the time it doesn't involve irregular heartbeats or bolts of lightning. Patricia Durkin knew she wanted to marry Kenneth Wignall when she saw the way he treated insects. "One night, a moth was flying around a light bulb and he caught it and let it out the window," she recalled. "I said: `That's it. He's the guy.' "
