Press of New England, paper, $15 (0-87451-000-1). DDC: 813. Newspaper columnists used to do more than publicize politicians' peccadilloes. They actually made up wacky stories and improbable characters. Such a columnist was Don Marquis (1878-1937), creator of archy, a poetic cockroach who dive-bombed a typewriter headfirst, one key at a time, to produce "vers libre" and the occasional ballade, all in lowercase letters and sans punctuation because archy, giving his all to strike a single key, had naught to spare to depress "shift." Somehow, not all of archy's stuff had been collected, and a few years ago, Marquis collector Jeff Adams presented archyology , which was a pretty good blast from the past. But Adams saved the best for last. Although references to World War I and Prohibition gently date it, Marquis' comedy is fresh and funny still, especially a detective-story parody in prose, "The Great False Teeth Mystery," which features archy as sleuth and which ran in progressively loonier installments and appears that way here. Think Carol Burnett joining Monty Python for a Sam Spade spoof, or cartoonist Gahan Wilson's tough-guy mystery burlesque, Eddy Deco's Last Caper

Don Marquis (1878-1937) was born in Walnut, Illinois and worked as a teacher, a sewing-machine salesman a printer, and a railroad man before finding his way into newspapers. In 1916, he first introduced, in his column in the New York Sun , archy and mehitabel—a philosophical cockroach and a down-on-her-luck cat, portrayed in free verse ostensibly written by archy. Marquis also wrote novels, plays, poetry and satire. The poem in this anthology was his only work for The New Yorker Return to Performance Page

Michael "Shindy Mike" Regan, son of a tavern keeper from Clancy's Alley in Chicago's fourth precinct, fights his way up from poverty to political and financial boss of his ward, with considerable influence over the rest of the city as well. At this point, Regan woos and wins, by default, the hand of Emily Griswald, daughter of the city's leading wheat dealer. Regan learns quickly that love, particularly when it is one-sided, cannot overcome the stigma of having been born on the wrong side of town. A strike, a financial crisis, and mob action at length climax the novel. Taking a slightly different point of viewthat of the shipper rather than the speculator in wheat The Boss offers a perspective on the grain market that is overlooked by most novelists who deal with the topic. McCUTCHEON, GEORGE BARR, 1866-1928.

In 1967 during the Six Day War between Israel and the Arab States, Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats supported by helicopters and amphibious assault forces attacked the American intelligence ship USS Liberty in international waters for 75 minutes. The attack was coordinated by Israeli headquarters ashore and was preceded by several hours of low-level reconnaissance. Thirty-four men died and 174 were wounded. The government of Israeli claims the attack was a result of error and misidentification. Jim was Officer-of-the-Deck when the attack started, and is author of Assault on the Liberty (Random House, 1980; Ballantine paperback 1986) which tells the story.
The attack has been a matter of controversy since 1967. Survivors and many key government officials including Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer say the attack was no accident. Two Israeli officers have come forward to admit that the attack was no accident. Yet the Israeli government and its supporters insist it was a "tragic case of misidentification" and charge that survivors and their eyewitness supporters are lying.
Jim's USS Liberty Page presents part of the story along with some historical information and related files
