Who was Don Marquis and who cares?
Donald Robert Perry Marquis 1878-1937, was a newspaper columnist, humorist, poet, playwright and author of about 35 books of which the best known are books of humorous poetry about Archy the cockroach and Mehitabel the cat. Don's work appeared regularly in the New York Sun and the Saturday Evening Post , among other places. Though largely forgotten today, in his time Don Marquis was often described as America's most popular and best-loved columnist, playwright, humorist and author. Don still had enough fans in 1978, 41 years after his death, that several dozen people assembled in Port Townsend, Washington, to celebrate his 100th birthday. Among the celebrants were Frank Herbert , author of the Dune trilogy; William McCollum, Jr., editor of

Don Marquis Quotes
The successful people are the ones who can think up stuff for the rest of the world to keep busy at. Ours is a world where people don't know what they want and are willing to go through hell to get it. Middle age is the time when a man is always thinking in a week or two he will feel as good as ever. If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; but if you really make them think, they'll hate you. Every cloud has its silver lining but it is sometimes a little difficult to get it to the mint. Happiness is the interval between periods of unhappiness. An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all. A pessimist is a person who has had to listen to too many optimists. An idea isn't responsible for the people who believe in it. It is better to be happy for a moment and be burned up with beauty than to live a long time and be bored all the while. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday. Man cannot be uplifted; he must be seduced into virtue.

http://www.donmarquis.com/don/
DonMarquis.com Donald Robert Perry Marquis (1878-1937) was a celebrated New York newspaper columnist and humorist in the early decades of the last century. Today he is remembered mostly for his stories of Archy and Mehitabel, a lowercase cockroach and a toujours gai alley cat, but in his lifetime Marquis was known equally well for the Old Soak a hip-flask philosopher who struggled to endure the dry days of Prohibition. Altogether, he wrote five plays, dozens of books, and hundreds of poems and short stories. Marquis was born July 29, 1878, in rural Walnut, Illinois, and began his newspaper career setting type and writing for small-town weeklies. After brief stints as a reporter in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, he moved to Atlanta in 1902 and worked at the Atlanta News and the Atlanta Journal before taking a job with Joel Chandler Harris in 1907 as associate editor of the new Uncle Remus's Magazine. The magazine gave him nationwide exposure and also introduced him to his first wife, Reina Melcher, a freelance writer and budding novelist. In 1909, a year after Harris' death, Marquis moved to New York to seek his fortune. He worked at several New York newspapers before moving to The Evening Sun in 1912, where he parlayed a job writing editorials into a signed daily column, The Sun Dial. Marquis' column distinguished itself for its breezy mix of quips, commentary and humorous verse and for the farcical characters who chronicled the events and fashions of their time. In addition to the Old Soak and Archy and Mehitabel, the cast included Hermione, a Greenwich Village dilletante; Fothergill Finch, an affected poet; and Capt. Peter Fitzurse, an unreconstructed raconteur.

http://www.donmarquis.com/readingroom/grandfather.html
DonMarquis.com Following is an original, previously unpublished story by Don Marquis (1878-1937), written and rewritten in the early 1930s. Don had intended to use this bit of light fantasy as the first chapter of a planned autobiography, but he eventually dropped the project and spent his last years working on a mostly autobiographical novel, "Sons of the Puritans," which was published after his death. "God's Grandfather" was edited in 2003 to incorporate revisions penned by Marquis on several copies of the manuscript owned by Knox College of Galesburg, Illinois (where Marquis attended classes in 1898-1899). This online edition is its first publication. Special thanks go to Carley Robison, archives curator at Knox's Seymour Library, who made the manuscript available, and to Knox College itself, which allowed its publication. John Batteiger, July 29, 2003
GOD'S GRANDFATHER.
By Don Marquis
All my life I had been hearing such expressions as, "he is as old as God's Grandfather," or "that happened when God's Grandfather was a little boy," and so forth, used to denote immense, legendary age. I had even used such expressions myself, but had never thought of God's Grandfather as a real person. Last night very late or very early this morning I was writing the phrase, using it in a scrap of dialogue, when something impelled me to look up from the table at which I was working. An elderly personage was regarding me from the other side of the table with a manner not at all sympathetic, and more than a little daunting because he was so near.

Donald Robert Perry Marquis (1878-1937) was a celebrated newspaper columnist in New York from 1912 to 1926. He also wrote 27 books, five plays and hundreds of poems and short stories during a life of public acclaim and personal tragedies, including the untimely deaths of his two children and two wives. Today he is remembered for his stories of Archy and Mehitabel an indomitable cockroach and a toujors-gai alley cat but in his lifetime he was perhaps best know for the Old Soak, an unrepentent souse during the dry days of Prohibition. The Old Soak was the title character of two books, a top Broadway play in 1922-23, and a silent movie in 1926 and a "talkie" in 1937. Marquis' newspaper columns also gave life to Hermione, a Greenwich Village dilletante, and more than a dozen other characters who chronicled the tumultuous events and fashions of their time. Marquis was one of the most quoted writers in Manhattan in the 1920s, when New York's literary scene was approaching its zenith. His newspaper contemporaries were Christopher Morley, Heywood Broun and the legendary F.P.A., Franklin Pierce Adams, but only Adams challenged Marquis for the heart and soul of New Yorkers of that era. The great writers who came soon afterward Robert Benchly, Dorothy Parker, James Thurber considered Marquis a New York icon.
