Christopher Marlowe
Short Biography Birth
Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury, the son of a shoemaker. Education
In 1578 (14) he gained a scholarship to The King’s School in Canterbury, where the syllabus included religion, music and Latin grammar, Latin and Greek literature and ancient and modern history. The boys were also encouraged to write poetry in Latin and to perform plays. In 1580 (16) he gained a scholarship to Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, the requirements of which stipulated that the candidate must not only be well schooled in Latin grammar, but also be able to compose a Latin verse and sing plain song. His ability to qualify for this scholarship after such a short period suggests that he must have received some form of formal education elsewhere prior to his entry into The King's School, though it is not known where. He studied at Corpus Chisti for more than six years, receiving his MA in 1587 (23) after some hesitation on the part of the University authorities on account of his non attendance. A letter to the University from the Privy Council explained his absences as necessary and to his country’s advantage, and was signed by five of its members, including the Lord Treasurer

Who Ever Loved, That Loved Not at First Sight?

a poem by Christopher Marlowe
The Marlowe / Shakespeare Identity problem The Mystery surrounding the life and death of Christopher Marlowe has intrigued many. It has even lead to serious debate as to whether Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare are in fact the same person... Marlowe moved in high circles within the court of Queen Elizabeth I. The chief advisor to the Queen was Sir Francis Walsingham whose role necessitated a network of spies and it was believed that Marlow was in his employ in this capacity. Marlowe is believed to have been murdered in a tavern in Deptford, a district of London, on May 30th 1593. Marlowe and his friend Ingram Frizer were drinking together and when they were about to leave began to argue over the payment of the bill. Marlowe grabbed Ingram Frizers dagger from its sheath, there was a struggle and Ingram Frizer retrieved the dagger and struck a blow in Marlowes eye. The blow was a lethal one and Christopher Marlowe was buried two days later in an unmarked grave. The mystery is that a week earlier a warrant had been issued for the poets arrest on charges of heresy, which carried the death penalty. Christopher Marlowes killer, Frizer, pleaded self-defense and received a pardon from the Queen.

    He was educated at King's School in his native Canterbury and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he proceeded B.A. in 1584 and M.A. in 1587.
    The privy council intervened to see that his employment on some confidential mission for the government, in which he had proved "orderly and discreet," should not put him at a disadvantage in the matter of his M.A. degree.
    For the remaining six years of his life there is evidence of exceptional activity. Apparently he continued to serve as a confidential agent for the government; he engaged in the philosophical or theological speculation of a circle centering around Raleigh; he achieved distinction by his non-dramatic verse, of which the unfinished Hero and Leander is the most important example and he became the outstanding dramatist of London, in association chiefly with the Admiral's Company of players.

By Michael Dirda Sunday, January 9, 2005; Page BW15 THE WORLD OF CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE By David Riggs. Henry Holt. 411 pp. $30 William Shakespeare, according to Keats, possessed "negative capability," that is, he was able to become so fully each of his characters that his own personality remains permanently elusive. As a result, we can never quite picture the creator of "Hamlet," "Henry IV" and "As You Like It": He contains multitudes, though he probably thought of himself as just another hard-working theater professional, a businessman of letters.
Januar 2005 in Kultur / Medien Druckversion Artikel versenden zurück

Elizabethan poet, dramatist, and William Shakespeare's predecessor in English drama. Marlowe was killed on June 1, 1593, in a tavern broil by Ingram Frizer, and buried at St. Nicholas, Deptford. His dramatic career lasted only six years. And as we all know, English-born mystery writer Raymond Chandler lent Marlowe's name to his own hero Philip Marlowe. Come live with me, and be my love;
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills and fields, Woods or steepy mountain yields.
(from The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, c. 1589) Marlowe was born in Canterbury as the son of a shoemaker. He attended the King's School and was awarded a scholarship from the foundation of Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. Marlowe studied the Bible and the Reformation theologians as well as philosophy and history at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In 1584 he gained his degree. Marlowe then left his studies to carry out work for the government. In 1587 he achieved his M.A. University authorities, believing he had been converted to Catholicism, were first unwilling to grant his degree. It did not help him either, that he had been away too much from his studies. When the Queen's Privy Council interceded on Marlowe's behalf, the dispute was settled.
