Part of our British Authors section. Marlowe, Christopher (1564-1593), Born the same year as Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe was to become the first great poet of the theatre's second great age. His life, much like the lives of his characters, would be short and violent. The son of a shoemaker, Marlowe attended King's School, Canterbury and Corpus Christi College where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1584 and his Masters degree three years later. According to university records, Marlowe disappeared frequently during his last years at school, exceeding the number of absences permitted him by statute and putting his degree in jeopardy. Apparently, much of this time was spent in Rheims among the Catholics who were plotting against Queen Elizabeth's protestant regime. Because of his absences and the fact that he refused to take holy orders, the university refused, for a time, to confer his degree, but the authorities... 44. CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE - LoveToKnow Article On CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
Marlowe, Christopher (15641593), English dramatist, the father of English tragedy, and instaurator of dramatic blank verse, the eldest son of a shoemaker
http://64.1911encyclopedia.org/M/MA/MARLOWE_CHRISTOPHER.htm
CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
MARLOWE, CHRISTOPHER Marlowes career as a dramatist lies between the years 1587 and I 593, and the four great plays to which reference has been made were Tamburlaine the Great, an heroic epic in dramatic form divided into two parts of five acts each (1587, printed in 1590); Dr Faustus (1588, entered at Stationers Hall 1601); The Famous Tragedy of the Rich Jew of Malta (dating perhaps from 1589, acted in 1592, printed in 1633); and Edward the Second (printed 1594). The very first words of Tamburlaine sound the trumpet note of attack in the older order of things dramatic From jigging veins of riming mother wits And such conceits as clownage keeps in pay Well lead you to the stately tent of war, Where you shall hear the Scythian Tamburlaine Threatening the world with high astounding terms And scourging kingdoms with his conquering sword. It leapt with a bound to a place beside Kyds Spanish Tragedy, and few plays have been more imitated by rivals (Greenes Aiphonsus of Aragon, Peeles Battle of Alcazar, Selimus, Scanderbeg) or more keenly satirized by the jealousy and prejudice of out-distanced competitors. (T. SE.) It is now a commonplace of criticism to observe and regret the decline of power and interest after the opening acts of The Jew of Malta. This decline is undeniable, though even the latter part of the play (the text of which is very corrupt) is not wanting in rough energy; but the first two acts would be sufficient foundation for the durable fame of a dramatic poet. In the blank verse of Milton alonewho perhaps was hardly less indebted than Shakespeare was before him to Marlowe as the first English master of word-music in its grander formshas the glory or the melody of passages in the opening soliloquy of Barabbas been possibly surpassed. The figure of the hero before it degenerates into caricature is as finely touched as the poetic execution is excellent; and the rude and rapid sketches of the minor characters show at least some vigour and vivacity of touch.

Marlowe, Christopher (1564-1593)
page: Christopher Marlowe represents homoerotic situations and incidents in his plays and poems more frequently and more variously that any other major English Renaissance writer. Born in Canterbury in the same year as Shakespeare, Marlowe was his most significant predecessor as an English playwright who was also a great poet. The son of a cobbler who earned a scholarship to Cambridge, where he received a B.A. in 1584 and an M.A. in 1587, Marlowe pursued a course of study that was designed to culminate in holy orders, yet the most profound result of his education may have been his love of classical literature, especially Ovid, whom he was to translate and whose comic ironies and worldly sophistication were to influence him greatly. CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
"Them that love not tobacco and boys are fools." Birthplace

Canterbury, England
Education
The son of a shoemaker, he won a scholarship to Corpus Christi, Cambridge (history, philosophy, theology). His MA was delayed by long absences, possibly spying abroad, and suspicion over his religion.

Amorous Leander, beautiful and young,

His dangling tresses that were never shorn,
Had they been cut, and unto Colchos borne,
Would have allur'd the vent'rous youth of Greece To hazard more than for the golden Fleece. Fair Cynthia wish'd his arms might be her sphere; Grief makes her pale, because she moves not there. His body was as straight as Circe's wand; Jove might have sipt out nectar from his hand. Even as delicious meat is to the taste, So was his neck in touching, and surpast The white of Pelops' shoulder: I could tell ye, How smooth his breast was, and how white his belly, And whose immortal fingers did imprint That heavenly path with many a curious dint That runs along his back; but my rude pen Can hardly blazon forth the loves of men, Much less of powerful gods: let it suffice That my slack muse sings of Leandeis eyes

Name: Christopher Marlowe Birth Date: Death Date: May 30, 1593 Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: dramatist Christopher Marlowe Main Biography The English dramatist Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) was the first English playwright to reveal the full potential of dramatic blank verse and the first to exploit the tragic implications of Renaissance humanism. Although a number of English dramatists before Christopher Marlowe had achieved some notable successes in the field of comedy, none had produced a first-rate tragedy. It was Marlowe who made the first significant advances in tragedy. In each of his major plays he focuses on a single character who dominates the action by virtue of his extraordinary strength of will. Marlowe's thundering blank verse, although for the most part lacking the subtlety of Shakespeare's mature poetry, proved a remarkably effective medium for this kind of drama. Marlowe was born in February 1564, about 2 months before Shakespeare. His father was a prosperous middle-class merchant of Canterbury. Christopher received his early education at King's School in Canterbury and at the age of 17 went to .....

Biography of Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)
Christopher Marlowe Christopher Marlowe's life excites as much interest as his work. While his contemporary William Shakespeare has a disappointingly ordinary life story, Marlowe's short life seems packed with excitement and danger. He was born in Canterbury, the son of a cobbler, in the same year that saw the birth of Shakespeare. After attending the King's School in Canterbury, he went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. His spotty attendance earned the ire of the college administration, and Marlowe very nearly did not receive a degree. The Queen's Council intervened on his behalf, defending him on the grounds that he had been in the Queen's service. Evidence suggests that Marlowe had been serving his country as a spy in Catholic France. His scholarship was in expectation that he would take holy orders, but when Marlowe left Cambridge in 1587 it was to write for the stage. Before the year ended, both parts of the masterpiece Tamburlaine were produced for the London stage. In the short six years before his death, Marlowe achieved great success. Tamburlaine, Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and The Massacre at Paris were great successes, both popular and aesthetic, and these plays are all the more astonishing as the work of a man in his twenties. The two parts of Tamburlaine, in particular, constitute an astonishing debut work. If young Shakespeare had died with Marlowe in 1593, Marlowe would be remembered as the greater of the two playwrights. The chronological order of his plays' production dates is uncertain.
