Synopsis
Doctor Faustus, a well-respected German scholar, grows dissatisfied with the limits of traditional forms of knowledge—logic, medicine, law, and religion—and decides that he wants to learn to practice magic. His friends Valdes and Cornelius instruct him in the black arts, and he begins his new career as a magician by summoning up Mephastophilis, a devil. Despite Mephastophilis's warnings about the horrors of hell, Faustus tells the devil to return to his master, Lucifer, with an offer of Faustus's soul in exchange for twenty-four years of service from Mephastophilis. Meanwhile, Wagner, Faustus's servant, has picked up some magical ability and uses it to press a clown named Robin into his service. Marlowe’s version of the pervasive and poignant Faust myth speaks clearly to teenagers. The story of Dr. Faustus, learned and praised, yet unsatisfied with his lot in life strikes a clear note for teenagers. Teenagers, be they restless, idealistic, bored, overreaching or overwrought, all seem to hear Marlowe’s words. Students recognize that often they, metaphorically, are faced with the temptation to "sell their souls."

Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)
Biographical note
English dramatist, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era. He is known for his magnificent blank verse and overreaching protagonists. Marlowe's first success on the London stage was in 1587 with Tamburlaine, the story of the conqueror Timur. Tamburlaine Part II soon followed. His next play may have been Doctor Faustus, the first dramatic version of the Faust legend. His other known plays are: The Jew of Malta; Edward the Second, an English history play about the fall of Edward II and the accession of Edward III; and The Massacre at Paris, portraying the events surrounding the Saint Bartholomews Day Massacre in 1572. Dido, Queen of Carthage seems to be an early work, possibly written with Thomas Nashe. His other works include the minor epic Hero and Leander (unfinished, published 1598), the popular lyric The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, and translations of Ovid's Amores and the first part of Lucan's Pharsalia. The two parts of Tamburlaine were published in 1590; all his other works were published posthumously. In 1599 his translation of Ovid was banned and copies publicly burned as part of Archbishop Whitgift's crackdown on offensive material.

English playwright and poet whose development of blank verse influenced Shakespeare. His plays include Tamburlaine the Great (c. 1587) and Edward II (c. 1592). Encyclopedia Marlowe, Christopher, 1564–93, English dramatist and poet, b. Canterbury. Probably the greatest English dramatist before Shakespeare, Marlowe, a shoemaker's son, was educated at Cambridge and he went to London in 1587, where he became an actor and dramatist for the Lord Admiral's Company. His most important plays are the two parts of Tamburlaine the Great (c.1587), Dr. Faustus (c.1588), The Jew of Malta (c.1589), and Edward II (c.1592). Marlowe's dramas have heroic themes, usually centering on a great personality who is destroyed by his own passion and ambition. Although filled with violence, brutality, passion, and bloodshed, Marlowe's plays are never merely sensational. The poetic beauty and dignity of his language raise them to the level of high art. Most authorities detect influences of his work in the Shakespeare canon, notably in Titus Andronicus and King Henry VI.

    Marlowe, Christopher
English playwright and poet, considered the first great English dramatist and the most important Elizabethan dramatist before William Shakespeare , although his entire activity as a playwright lasted only six years. Earlier playwrights had concentrated on comedy; Marlowe worked on tragedy and advanced it considerably as a dramatic medium. His masterpiece is The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus.
Born in Canterbury on February 6, 1564, the son of a shoemaker, Marlowe was educated at the University of Cambridge. Going to London, he associated himself with the Admiral's Men, a company of actors for whom he wrote most of his plays. He was reputedly a secret agent for the government and numbered some prominent men, including Sir Walter Raleigh, among his friends, but he led an adventurous and dissolute life and held unorthodox religious views. In 1593 he was denounced as a heretic; before any action could be taken against him, in May of that year he was stabbed to death in a tavern brawl at Deptford over payment of a dinner bill.
As a poet Marlowe is known for "The Passionate Shepherd" (1599), which contains the lyric "Come Live with Me and Be My Love." Marlowe's mythological love poem, Hero and Leander, was unfinished at his death; it was completed by George Chapman and published in 1598. Marlowe also translated works of the ancient Latin poets Lucan and Ovid.

He dared disregard the classical unities in favor of a natural unity which comes from centering the action around one great character or great passion. He created an English drama in place of a slavish imitation of Greek and Latin dramas. He was, perhaps, the pioneer who blazed a trail for that still greater English dramatist born the same year, William Shakespeare Christopher Marlowe was the son of a shoemaker. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1583. Before he received his master's degree in 1587, his greatest tragic drama had been presented on the stage. Before he finished college he had also done at least part of the work of translating Ovid's Amores into English verse.
