Comets Burn Spartans, 35-14
Elgin's faithful liked enough of what they saw following the Comets' 35-14 win at Pleasant on Friday night that they joined their heroes en masse on the Spartans' tundra. The Comet squad burst into a pile of madness at the east end of the field and their fans soon got in on the act after Elgin had snapped Pleasant's 46-game Mid Ohio Athletic Conference winning streak.

Marion
County
If there's a packhorse community in Ohio, it's Marion. The county of 65,000 people and city by the same name almost has an excess of ways to move things.
The four-laned U.S. 23 delivers commuters and freight the 40 miles to Columbus or to one of three interstate highways. The main tracks of three rail lines Conrail, CSX and Norfolk Southern convene in the city of Marion, and the 100 trains a day that run the tracks are almost a permanent part of Marion's landscape. Marion Municipal Airport's all-weather runways accept executive aircraft and commercial freighters. Marion is a best bet for rail-using companies. In times past, Marion was the largest rail hub between New York and Chicago, and for many years was known as "Little Chicago." Ask diaper-producer Drypers how much it saves over truck shipments. The company uses 400-500 rail cars a year to ship in pulp for its disposable diapers. It would take 3.5 times that many trucks to handle the raw material. The company makes a half billion diapers and 72 million training pants a year about 60 percent of the amount the company produces domestically. The plant can accommodate two rail cars at a time, and the company intends to expand that to three in the coming year. The fast-growing company is adding new lines to handle expanded business. "Ultra Care (the predecessor of Drypers) selected Marion originally because of its crossroads location," says Jeff Smith, logistics manager.

In the fall, visitors float down the river during one of the South's best events- -The Color Cruise. Taking place during the last two weeks of October, the festival allows folks traveling by water or land from the entire region to enjoy the changing foliage. At the Shell Mound Recreation Area, entertainment, crafters, and every kind of food- -from funnel cakes to boiled peanutsare available to festival goers. Marion County celebrates spring with the National Cornbread Festival and Celebrity Cookoff, held in South Pittsburg. This town has had a revitalization over the past few years and celebrates by bringing thousands of people into the area for a "street fair" setting. Once again, the focus is on down-home entertainment, barbeque and, of course, cornbread!

98. Marion Island
A brief description of and phialtelic covers from Marion Island.
http://www.iomoon.com/marion.html
Marion Island, Republic of South Africa. Located in the southern Indian Ocean, 2,300 km SE of Cape Town, Marion Island last erupted in 1980 from a fissure extending from the summit to west coast. The island is composed of two shield volcanoes and last eruption was VEI magnitude 1. There are 150 scoria cones superimposed on the two shields. The discovery of the island is accredited to the french explorer Nicolas Marion-Dufresne in 1772. Neither he, nor later, Cook in 1776, Ross in 1840, the Gauss expedition of 1901 were able to land because of adverse weather conditions. The first attempt to map and describe the geology of the island was undertaken in 1964-65 Cover below does not show stamp of volcano, but smaller black cancel has outline map of the island. The large team cancel to the upper left was designed and paid for by Edgar K. Haberer who served as Medical Officer and unofficial Postmaster for the expedition. The 30th Relief Team to Marion left Cape Town on 6.04.1973 on board the Ship MV "RSA" under the command of Captain McNish and arrived at Marion Island on the 12th of April. The team left Marion Island on 23rd of May 1974 and arrived at Cape Town on the 29th. Edgar lives in Germany and is still active in philately, being Secretary General of the International Association of Philatelic Journalists (A.I.J.P.) and President of the International Study-Group of the Philately of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. 99. City Of Marion
An Internet guide to the sights and sounds of Marion, Kansas.
http://www.marionks.com/city.html
Marion Cybertour Chamber of Commerce Education Museum ... Contact Welcome to
Marion, Kansas "Marion, 'Best Place I've Seen' to live, learn, work, visit, play, and retire." Description Marion is the county seat of Marion County. The downtown area is notable for some fine old buildings. The stone Elgin House Apartments in Marion used to be a fancy hotel. The Marion County Courthouse in Marion (built in 1906) is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Municipal Building is much newer and combines the city offices, the city library, and the Municipal Auditorium. It is an impressive expression of the optimism of the generation that built it. As you travel east from downtown, you cross a small creek running through the city park, pass the local museum, and climb a steep ridge. The Hill School is the oldest school building still in use as a school in Kansas. North of this school is a comfortable neighborhood with many beautiful older homes. History Government Surveyors directed the first settlers to the junction of Muddy Creek, Clear Creek, and the Cottonwood River, one saying it was "The Best Place I've Seen." The town was named for the Revolutionary War general, Francis Marion, Who was also know as The Swamp Fox. The first settlers arrived in 1860 and made their first camp at the location of the present Central Park.
