I do not think that the fact argues a good memory, for I have never been clever at learning words by heart, in prose or rhyme; so that I believe my remembrance of events depends much more upon the events themselves than upon my possessing any special facility for recalling them. Perhaps I am too imaginative, and the earliest impressions I received were of a kind to stimulate the imagination abnormally. A long series of little misfortunes, so connected with each other as to suggest a sort of weird fatality, so worked upon my melancholy temperament when I was a boy that, before I was of age, I sincerely believed myself to be under a curse, and not only myself, but my whole family and every individual who bore my name. In the gardens there are terraces and huge hedges of box and evergreen, some of which used to be clipped into shapes of animals, in the Italian style. I can remember when I was a lad how I used to try to make out what the trees were cut to represent, and how I used to appeal for explanations to Judith, my Welsh nurse. She dealt in a strange mythology of her own, and peopled the gardens with griffins, dragons, good genii and bad, and filled my mind with them at the same time. My nursery window afforded a view of the great fountains at the head of the upper basin, and on moonlight nights the Welshwoman would hold me up to the glass and bid me look at the mist and spray rising into mysterious shapes, moving mystically in the white light like living things.

TALLY RECORD: 5 Confirmed 1 Probable DECORATIONS: Silver Star Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Cluster Marion Franklin Kirby was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 14 July 1919. Joining the Army Air Forces from Lometa, Texas, he completed flight training on 12 December 1941. Sent to the Southwest Pacific, Lieutenant Kirby flew P-38s with the 80th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group, based in New Guinea he was credited with probably destroying an Oscar between Lae and Salamaua on 21 May 1943. On 15 July he transferred to the newly organized 431st Fighter Squadron, 475th Fighter Group, then based in Australia. The Group moved to New Guinea in August. Operating out of Dobodura, Kirby logged his first victory with the 431st on 15 October, downing a Val dive bomber over Oro Bay, and two days later shot down a Zeke near Buna Bay. On 23 October, escorting B-24s to Rabaul, the 431st engaged 25-30 Japanese fighters diving on the bombers. In the ensuing combat, Kirby destroyed a Hamp. Fifth Air Force's campaign to neutralize Rabaul was capped by the 475th's 2 November mission. Timed to support the U.S. landings on Bougainville, the 475th Fighter Group's sweep to Rabaul was intended to keep Japanese aircraft out of Simpson Harbor. Shortly after passing the shoreline, Kirby noticed a B-25 with its right engine afire. Five or six Japanese fighters were trying to establish a gunnery pattern on the Mitchell, and Kirby dove into them, knocking down one. Turning back, he splashed another to become an ace.

Biography of Marion F. Johnson My Dad Marion F. Johnson served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 10 June 1934 to 21 March 1935. He was in the 560th Company. He first saw service at Camp F-160, Gold Center, Clarkia, Idaho doing labor (B. R. Control) type of work which he explained was really keeping the brush under control to prevent forest fires. He has many pictures that he took while there and also had the thrill of going hunting for the first time where he bagged his first deer. Dad next saw service at Camp P-216, Las Posadas, Angwin, California doing Brush Gang work but he explained that they planted a lot of trees. His one wish was to go back some day and see how the trees had grown. Sadly he never made it. After giving it much thought he decided not to re-enlist and was discharged at Fort Knox, Kentucky the same place he was enrolled eight months earlier. My Dad really enjoyed his days in the CCC's. He saw new places, made life long friends and carried a lot of memories in his heart for years. His record of service is as follows: a. From 7-10-34 to 7-16-34, under War Dept. at Fort Knox, Kentucky
