He died of the plague in Vindobona (now Vienna) on March 17, 180, before he could begin the invasion. His plan was abandoned by his son and successor, Commodus. In his domestic policy Marcus Aurelius was a champion of the poor, for whom he founded schools, orphanages, and hospitals and alleviated the burden of taxes. He also tried to humanize criminal laws and the treatment of slaves by their masters. As a philosopher he is remembered for his Meditations, a compendium of 12 books of moral precepts written in Greek. The work, an important formulation of the philosophy of Stoicism, reveals his belief that the moral life leads to tranquillity, and stresses the virtues of wisdom, justice, fortitude, and moderation. (Microsoft Encarta) Another source adds: The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was perhaps the only true philosopher- king in the history of the world. He was not an original nor a systematic philosopher, but in his meditations, a series of notes to himself, he formulated the Stoic beliefs with a passionate religious conviction. He shared the basic Stoic belief in the divinity of the cosmos as an intelligent being with a soul, and stressed (perhaps too fatalistically) the harmony of all things and the importance of resigning oneself to whatever happened.

With that, I invite you to enjoy a quick look at one of my favorite philosophers.
Major Work
It was during battles against Barbarian tribes in the Danube region near Hungary (not unlike the opening scene of Gladiator), when Aurelius wrote Meditations
His intention was not to publish anything; rather, he used his journal to remind himself of the lessons he learned as a young nobleman being groomed to one day rule the empire.
The book is broken down into bite-size nuggets of wisdom that you can enjoy a few minutes at a time. We highly recommend you start enjoying!
Must read: Meditations
(Editor's note: I love Aurelius. I fell even more in love with him when I was in Budapest and ran into his exhibit in the Roman Antiquities wing of the Hungarian National Museumwhich described the fact that he wrote Meditations pretty much on that location. So, as any good student would do, I rushed to the bookstore to pick up another copy of his book to study the master on his home turf!)

Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius (121-180) was a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. He is best known for his Meditations . He was concerned with the social problems of the poor, the enlsaved, and the incarcerated. Ironically, he continued the persecution of the growing Christian population. He died of the plague while planning an excursion that would have extended the Roman Empire northwards. His son and successor, Commodus, abandoned those plans. Marcus Aurelius was one of the great philosophers who embraced Stoicism. He was influenced by Epicetus as a young man.

"Nothing happens to any man that he is not formed by nature to bear." Roman Emperor and Stoic, the author of Meditations of Writings to Himself in twelve books. Its first printing appeared in English in 1634. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius the celebrated Pax Romana collapsed - perhaps this made the emperor the most impressive of all Stoics. An important feature of the philosophy was that everything will recur: the whole universe becomes fire and then repeats itself. Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome as a descendent of Roman ancestors. When only a small child, he attracted the attention of the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138) - a paedophile. He was appointed by the Emperor to the priesthood in 129, and Hadrian also supervised his education. Marcus Aurelius was taught by the most able teachers of the time. The Emperor Antonius, who succeeded Hadrian, adopted Marcus Aurelius as his son. He was admitted to the Senate, and then twice the consulship. In 147 he shared tribunician power with Antonius. During this time he began composition of his Meditations.

Diogenes, who was a contemporary of Plato and Aristotle, laid out an important part of the Hellenistic world-view with his Cynicism. Please note: the Cynicism of the originator of this philosophy, Diogenes, had little in common with what we today understand as cynicism. Even before Philip and Alexander had arrived on the Greek scenethe constant warring among the Greeks, the hunger of Athens for power and dominion over its neighbors, the general sense that things were not right politically in Greecehad caused Diogenes to begin to look to inner or personal integrity as a substitute for lost public integrity (which had once been the focus of the moral life in Greece).

Marcus Aurelius,
full name Marcus Aelius Aurelius Antoninus (121-180), Roman emperor (161-180) and Stoic philosopher. Marcus Aurelius, whose original name was Marcus Annius Verus, was born in Rome on April 20, 121, the nephew by marriage of Antoninus Pius, later emperor. After the latter succeeded to power, he adopted his nephew and married him to his daughter (145). Marcus Aurelius became emperor in 161, and throughout his reign was engaged in defensive wars on the northern and eastern frontiers of the empire. His legions succeeded in repelling the Parthian invasion of Syria 166, but Rome was again forced into battle in 167 by the Germanic tribes on the Rhine-Danube frontier. Marcus Aurelius returned to Rome intermittently during the German campaign to undertake legal and administrative reforms. Although he was particularly concerned with public welfare and even sold his personal possessions to alleviate the effects of famine and plague within the empire, he ruthlessly persecuted the Christians, believing them a threat to the imperial system. In 176 he returned to the northern frontier, hoping to extend the boundaries of the empire north-eastwards to the Wisla river. He died of the plague in Vindobona (now Vienna) on March 17, 180, before he could begin the invasion. His plan was abandoned by his son and successor, Commodus.

ANCIENT ROMAN HISTORY
2000-1000 BCE: Rome Indo-European immigrants slowly inhabit Italy by way of the Alps. They bring the horse, the wheeled cart, and artistic knowledge of bronze work to the Italian peninsula. Two different groups, the Greeks and the Etruscans, occupy different regions of the peninsula during the eighth century. 753 BCE: Rome Archeological research indicates that the founders of Rome itself are Italic people who occupy the area south of the Tiber River. By the sixth century BCE, Rome will have become the dominant power of most of its surrounding area. Their conservative government consists of a kingship, resembling the traditional values of the patriarchal family; an assembly, composed of male citizens of military age; and a Senate, comprised of elders who serve as the heads of different community sects. 600 BCE: Rome The Etruscans, believed to be natives of Asia Minor, establish cities stretching from northern to central Italy. Their major contributions to the Romans are the arch and the vault, gladiatorial combat for entertainment and the study of animals to predict future events. The Greeks establish city-states along the southern coast of Italy and the island of Sicily. Their contributions to the Romans are the basis of the Roman alphabet, many religious concepts and artistic talent as well as mythology. 509 BCE: Rome The Roman monarchy is overthrown and replaced with a republic. For more than two centuries following the establishment of the Roman Republic, Rome is constantly at war with the other inhabitants of Italy (the Etruscans and the Greeks).

One of these conspirators was his friend, Avidius, who was also rumored to be having an affair with his wife, Faustina. Marcus learned of Avidius' plans and ordered his soldiers to find him and put down the rebellion. But Marcus did not want Avidius dead, he wanted to forgive him and restore the friendship they once shared. This desire reflects Marcus' following of the Stoic teaching, "Follow the pattern of your life; be true to your nature." For Marcus, this meant acting like a King, with firmness but not with malice or hatred. Marcus was never able to forgive Avidius, as he was killed, along with some of his followers. And eventually his wife died on a journey to the rebellious provinces Marcus wished to return to allegiance and friendship with Rome. In the end, Marcus died a Cynic, a philosopher doomed to be a king. He believed in peace and harmony, but practiced warfare, including the persecution of Christians because their teachings he saw as opposition to Rome, hence enemies of Rome. His contradiction in behavior and belief are justified by himself in his writing, "I, Marcus Aurelius, have never intentionally given pain to another." Marcus accepted his destiny to be emperor of Rome and detested his fortune because it prevented him from being good.
