By health I mean the power to live a full, adult, living, breathing life in close contact with... the earth and the wonders thereof - the sea - the sun.
Katherine Mansfield
Make it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can't build on it; it's only for wallowing in.
Katherine Mansfield
Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth.

On this day in 1923 Katherine Mansfield died of tuberculosis at the age of thirty-four. Near the end Mansfield scoffed at "my little stories like birds bred in cages," and admitted to having had a lifelong "chaos within." Her biographers have agreed with the chaos, and the literary historians are unequivocal about the accomplishment: "A symbol of liberation, innovation and unconventionality. Her life was new, her manners and dress was new, her art was new." top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR

The Fly
by Katherine Mansfield
"Y'are very snug in here," piped old Mr. Woodifield, and peered out of the great, green-leather armchair by his friend the boss's desk as a baby peers out of its pram. His talk was over; it was time for him to be off. But he did not want to go. Since he had retired, since his ... stroke, the wife and the girls kept him boxed up in the house every day of the week except Tuesday. On Tuesday he was dressed and brushed and allowed to cut back to the City for the day. Though what he did there the wife and girls couldn't imagine. Made a nuisance of himself to his friends, they supposed....Well, perhaps so. All the same, we cling to our last pleasures as the tree clings to its last leaves. So there sat old Woodifield, smoking a cigar and staring almost greedily at the boss, who rolled in his office chair, stout, rosy, five years older than he, and still going strong, still at the helm. It did one good to see him. Wistfully, admiringly, the old voice added,"It's snug in here, upom my word!"

Information Accompanied by her future husband, John Middleton Murry, Katherine Mansfield made a short, but by all accounts lively, weekend visit to D.H.Lawrence and Frieda Weekley in their holiday home in Kingsgate in July 1913. Mansfield was at the beginning of her brief literary career ,which is chiefly marked by collections of short stories and poems, many of them published posthumously. The friendship between the two couples, which was by turns tempestuous and intense, was cemented during this seaside interlude.
