Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) was born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp in Wellington, New Zealand. In 1903 she persuaded her father, a banker and industrialist, to send her to London to study the cello. After a brief return to New Zealand, she went back to London with a small allowance from her family, deciding to become a writer instead of a musician after meeting D. H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. Mansfield, Katherine (1888-1923) Though Katherine Mansfield was reticent in the depiction of lesbianism in her short stories, she had close female friendships and was always deeply concerned with the status of women. She was born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp in Wellington, New Zealand. Her closest relationship was with her grandmother, who figures as the most sympathetic figure in her "New Zealand" stories. A chronological arrangement of those stories by Ian Gordon, entitled Undiscovered Country (1974), provides an insight into her own perspective on her childhood. Sponsor Message.
After attending Wellington Girls' High School, she was sent to Queen's College, London, as a finishing school. Back in Wellington, she became disenchanted with its intellectual life. Though her father helped her get some of her early stories published, she pined for London. She was allowed to return in 1908, with an annual allowance to supplement any income from her writing. In London, she found her way into the literary scene, working principally with John Middleton Murry. Her personal life often got in the way of her writing career. Married hastily to an acquaintance, she was pregnant by another man. The marriage lasted barely days. Her mother sailed at once for London (after cutting Kathleen out of her will), hustled her off to a spa in Germany, then left her alone to go through the suffering of a miscarriage.

Only two people shared her "special" seat: a fine old man in a velvet coat, his hands clasped over a huge carved walking-stick, and a big old woman, sitting upright, with a roll of knitting on her embroidered apron. They did not speak. This was disappointing, for Miss Brill always looked forward to the conversation. She had become really quite expert, she thought, at listening as though she didn't listen, at sitting in other people's lives just for a minute while they talked round her. Behind the rotunda the slender trees with yellow leaves down drooping, and through them just a line of sea, and beyond the blue sky with gold-veined clouds. Tum-tum-tum tiddle-um! tiddle-um! tum tiddley-um tum ta! blew the band. Just at that moment a boy and girl came and sat down where the old couple had been. They were beautifully dressed; they were in love. The hero and heroine, of course, just arrived from his father's yacht. And still soundlessly singing, still with that trembling smile, Miss Brill prepared to listen. "No, not now," said the girl. "Not here, I can't."

    Course Description
For a few years, Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) and Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) were, in their different ways, among the most influential women of letters in England. The relationship between the two was complicated and sometimes tense. Differences of background, taste, and mode of living made it difficult at times for them to find common groundand, of course, they became literary rivals. But their shared passion for writing as a way of life led them to a kind of grudging mutual respecteach saw something of herself in the other. After Mansfield's untimely death in 1923, Woolf said "I have a feeling that I shall think of her at intervals all through life" and, indeed, in 1931, confessed that "I dream of her often..." As James King suggests in his recent biography: "The truth was that Katherine Mansfield was the shadow self of Virginia Woolf, the woman writer whoin love and hatredgoaded her to do her best" (Virginia Woolf, 1995:324).
In this seminar, we will undertake an in-depth reading of the lives and works of Mansfield and Woolf and the points of contact between the two. We will draw extensively upon non-fictional sourcesdiaries, essays, letters, and reviewsas well as upon fiction. For a number of good reasons, the focus will be upon short fiction, but we will also consider the evolution of such longer works as Mansfield's The Aloe (first published in a much sparer form as Prelude) and Woolf's Mrs Dalloway (which evolved from a sequence of short stories). Among the issues likely to receive some attention are androgyny, creativity, epiphany, lyricism, modernist techniques, stylistic innovation, the sense of self, and visions of childhood.

That gives you one idea of Katherine Mansfield's writing. Her stories share the fine perception and sensibility of Woolf's novels but her characters are not separate from from the physical world. They are engaged in it. As was Mansfield herself. She was known as quite the female libertine for her time. Travelling around. Sleeping around (with both sexes). Thinking around. Experimenting around. Nothing that Woolf and her Bloomsbury crowd didn't indulge in, mind you, but without their well-bred manners and cover of intellectualism. No wonder Woolf considered Mansfield cheap and whorish, while Mansfield found the slightly older author a prig. (They did seem to have enjoyed discussing writing with each other though. There is even a book available on their intense literary relationship, Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf: A Public of Two.
