The New York Times
declares, "The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey
has a winner!"
Variety ... The Daily Record "A Quiet, Restful Weekend in the Country With Noël Coward" Excerpted from the review by Naomi Siegel July 25, 2004 A raging case of style over substance can actually result in pure theater magic, given a playwright of infinite skill and a production to match. Gabriel Barre has directed this comedy of bad manners with panache, creating stylized montages that evoke Mark Swain's iconic photograph of the author.... Judith, the Bliss matriarch, is...played with witty flamboyance by Jill Gascoine...Katharine Leonard is delightfully ditsy as the fiercely energetic young woman [Sorel Bliss]. Michael Kary's Simon is a study in nascent manhood desperately searching for confirmation. His invitation to the sophisticated Myra Arundel, described by Judith as “using sex as a sort of shrimping net,” finds him playing besotted lover to an increasingly exasperated femme fatale. Cindy Katz gives a wonderfully shaded performance as Myra.

Peg O My Heart, based on J. Hartley Manners s breezy 1912 class comedy of thesame name that shot Laurette Taylor to stardom, is not a bad show.
http://www.talkinbroadway.com/ob/05_22_03.html
Peg O' My Heart Theatre Review by Matthew Murray Good songs and a good book are good for musicals, but aren't enough - the two elements must work together to tell a story neither can tell alone. The ideal way to accomplish this is, and has always been, a score created for a book and a book created for the songs. Obvious? Not really - how many musicals today succeed, though they ignore this simple musical theatre axiom? In most of those cases, however, it's the score that's already familiar, most likely composed of pre-existing hits. Charlotte Moore has a different type of show running at the Irish Repertory Theatre right now - she's added songs to an established play to create something she's calling a musical. Peg O' My Heart , based on J. Hartley Manners's breezy 1912 class comedy of the same name that shot Laurette Taylor to stardom, is not a bad show. Much of it is enchanting, the songs (which Moore wrote) are generally lilting and attractive, and the enterprise as a whole is a light, charming evening at the theatre. But though the production, which Moore also directed, has much going for it, a cohesive musical it most certainly is not. Moore's method of making the play a musical involves little more than plopping the songs down in the middle of Manners's pre-existing text. The end result is, unsurprisingly, one where the characters generally sing about things that have already been established through the dialogue. This begs the question: Why does

WHY I LIKE-
DRAMATIC ENTRANCE ...
Early Drama Output on British TV.
The 1920's to the 1950's
Although arguably it wasn't until the 1950's that major theatrical productions became a staple diet for British television viewers, with the likes of Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud finally accepting the medium as a serious rostrum to present their considerable talents (see part two of this article), the theatre provided a source of programming even in television's experimental days. The first ever television play was presented by the General Electric Company's test station WGY, Schenectady, N.Y., USA. Written by J. Hartley Manners and adapted by Mortimer Stewart, The Queen's Messenger , a 40-minute transmission on a low-definition 24-line mechanical system developed by Doctor Ernst Alexanderson, was broadcast for the benefit of the television developers in the days before TV sets were commercially available. The date was September 11th 1928. Within a few short months British TV experimenter John Logie Baird presented an experimental transmission of a play from the Baird Company's studios at 133 Long Acre, London. Box and Cox was probably seen by about several dozen viewers in addition to Baird's staff, as a number of amateur constructors were known to have built their own receivers from instructions published in the quarterly magazine
