Hist 498 E Marco Polo Tuesday 1:30-3:30 293 Mary Gates Hall Instructor: Patricia Ebrey 112A Smith ebrey@u.washington.edu Office hours: Tuesday 3:30-4:30, Wednesday 1-2 This senior seminar will focus on Marco Polo’s Description of the World as a source for understanding Asia in the late thirteenth century. After reading Marco Polo in translation, we will look at the controversies surrounding the book and the uses scholars have made of it. The first four weeks will be devoted to common readings to give us all a solid foundation in the topic. During the next two weeks, students will begin their research project by reading first another primary source, then another major secondary source, and reporting on both orally in class. The last three weeks will be devoted to discussion of drafts of the research papers. A packet of readings is available at Rams. Grading: 40 % participation, 60% research paper Research papers should draw on Marco Polo or engage Marco Polo issues in some other way. Below are some possible starting points: 1. Compare two or more early foreign perspectives on the Mongols or the Chinese (or some facet of Mongol or Chinese culture or society).

We are in the process of collecting a series of essays that will update
the state of studies on Sir John Mandeville=B4s Travels. Most of the
team of contributors for the collection is assembled, but we still have
room for a couple of contributions or three: at this point, these would
have to be centered, however, on the following subjects:
-Mandeville=B4s representation of Jerusalem, the role of that city as a
sign and a site in the world-view of the Travels.
-Mandeville=B4s perspectives on Jewish culture; the contrasting
representations of Islam and Jewishness in the text. -Forms of labour and material culture in the Travels.

The Bundahis is a Pahlavi text, meaning that it was written in the Middle Persian language. (300 B.C. - 950 A.D.) It is one of two great works about the ancient prophetic religion, Zoroastrianism, which was founded around the 12th century B.C. The work itself took an extraordinary amount of time to come together, having finally stopped growing in 1178. There are three subjects that the Bundahis covers; creation, the nature of earthly creatures, and the Kayanians (an ancient dynasty of Iran). According to the Bundahis , Gryphons were the largest and the first of all birds upon creation, and is associated with the bat. There are also remarks of "the griffin of three natures". These three natures, I can only presume to mean those of the eagle, lion, and the monstrous (chimerical). Bundahis Online Chapter 14 Chapter 19 ... He that will pass over the sea and come to land [to go to the city of Jerusalem, he may wend many ways, both on sea and land], after the country that he cometh from; [for] many of them come to one end. But troweth not that I will tell you all the towns, and cities and castles that men shall go by; for then should I make too long a tale; but all only some countries and most principal steads that men shall go through to go the right way.
