Jean de Mandeville
(MAUNDEVILLE, MONTEVILLA) The author of a book of travels much read in the Middle Ages Mohammedan is taken from the work "De statu Saracenarum" (1273) of the Dominican William of Tripolis. His account of the Armenians, Persians, Turks, etc., is borrowed from the "Historia orientalis" of Hayton, the former Prince of Armenia and later Abbot of Poitiers. For the country of the Tatars and China he made use almost word for word of the "Deseriptio orientalium" of the Franciscan Odoric of Pordenone, and in parts of the "Historia Mongolorum" of the Franciscan John of Plano Carpini. Apart from books of travels he plagiarised from works of a general nature, the old authors Pliny, Solinus, Josephus Flavius (Breslau, 1840); NICHOLSON in The Academy , 11 Nov., 1876, and 12 February, 1881; NICHOLSON AND YULE in Encycl. N the name of God, Glorious and Almighty! He that will pass over the sea and come to land [to go to the city of Jerusalem, he may wend many ways, both on sea and land], after the country that he cometh from; [for] many of them come to one end. But troweth not that I will tell you all the towns, and cities and castles that men shall go by; for then should I make too long a tale; but all only some countries and most principal steads that men shall go through to go the right way. First, if a man come from the west side of the world, as England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, or Norway, he may, if that he will, go through Almayne and through the kingdom of Hungary, that marcheth to the land of Polayne, and to the land of Pannonia, and so to Silesia. And the King of Hungary is a great lord and a mighty, and holdeth great lordships and much land in his hand. For he holdeth the kingdom of Hungary, Sclavonia, and of Comania a great part, and of Bulgaria that men call the land of Bougiers, and of the realm of Russia a great part, whereof he hath made a duchy, that lasteth unto the land of Nyfland, and marcheth to Prussia. And men go through the land of this lord, through a city that is clept Cypron, and by the castle of Neasburghe, and by the evil town, that sit toward the end of Hungary. And there pass men the river of Danube. Many will find this to be a strange and/or unsatisfying book. I must admit to having felt that way at times while reading, but overall I think I "got it." In the days before the Discovery Channel , before National Geographic , before airplanes, before transoceanic travel, and even before a southern hemisphere or American continent was thought to exist people had a tough time gaining information about the world beyond their village, city, or country. Without a remote control in hand or a travel agent on the other side of a phone or desk it wasn't so easy to explore the planet and its inhabitants. So the genre of medieval travel writers was born. They wrote of their travels, or pretended travels, to the delight of all classes of people. Among them, perhaps the most famous became Sir John Mandeville's Travels of the 14th Century. Milton sets out to uncover the truth about Mandeville as many claim he never existed, never went to the places he talks about, or had some sort of hidden agenda in his popular and well read work. My theory is that when Milton finds out that there isn't much to find out about Mandeville that will startle or shock his readers (Milton doesn't even really prove that Mandeville ever existed IMO) he decides to take a different approach and do what Mandeville probably didn't dovisit the places (Mandeville claimed to visit) and write a real, detailed, interesting, and in many ways symbolic travelogue of his (Milton's) adventures. On this level he succeeds. Those that don't like the book probably don't get as absorbed in Milton's travels as they should. Instead they are looking for findings on Mandeville which just aren't as forthcoming.
