Jean-Baptiste Say Il est l’auteur de la célèbre loi des débouchés Les produits s’échangent contre des produits ». La monnaie n’est donc qu’un « voile » sans grande conséquence sur l’économie réelle (production et échange de biens et services). La production d’un produit crée une richesse qui sera utilisée pour acheter d’autres produits, une crise de surproduction est donc rigoureusement impossible. La loi est reprise et améliorée aujourd’hui par les théoriciens de l’offre, qui placent la production et donc les entreprises au cœur de leur analyse. Thomas Robert Malthus Il fait partie avec Ricardo des économistes pessimistes. Il est célèbre pour sa théorie de la population La population croît à un rythme géométrique (1, 2, 4, 8, 16...) et la production agricole à un rythme arithmétique (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10...). Si rien n’est fait pour limiter la croissance de la population nous aboutirons à une catastrophe. Le malthusianisme est la théorie qui affirme qu’il faut limiter le nombre des enfants.

The manuscripts provide insights into Malthus' personal lifeespecially his relationships with his parents and his tutors. They also give details of the books he studied as a student, and suggest hitherto unknown influences on his intellectual development. They suggest a solution to the question of who or what influenced him to omit the controversial theological chapters from later editions of his Essay on Population; and his sermons present further evidence of his religious views."

En 1805 fue nombrado profesor de historia moderna y economía política del East India College, con lo que, de hecho, fue el primer profesor de economía política de la historia. Las teorías clásicas del crecimiento Las primeras preocupaciones de los economistas clásicos se dirigieron precisamente hacia el problema del crecimiento económico. El modelo elaborado por Adam Smith y desarrollado por Malthus tenía un substrato esencialmente agrarista. Mientras hubo tierras libres, la humanidad pudo crecer sin ningún límite. El exceso de población, cuando se producía, tenía una vía de escape en la emigración y en la roturación de nuevas tierras. Todos los individuos podían así obtener con su trabajo el producto suficiente para su subsistencia y para el mantenimiento de su familia.
Rvdo. Thomas R. Malthus (1766-1834) Pero cuando todas las tierras fértiles fueron ocupadas, el proceso de crecimiento empezó a mostrar sus limitaciones. Al continuar aumentando el número de los pobladores, los nuevos terrenos agrícolas requerían un mayor esfuerzo y proporcionaban menor cantidad de producto. Las mejores tierras tenían que alimentar a una población creciente y la mayor cantidad de trabajo que se les aplicaba conseguía muy menguados resultados en la producción. En otras palabras, cuando la tierra se convirtió en un factor limitativo, la ley de los rendimientos decrecientes empezó a actuar y la productividad del trabajo a disminuir. ESTAS FUERON SUS PALABRAS SOBRE LA RESTRICCIÓN MORAL Y NUESTRA OBLIGACIÓN DE PRACTICAR ESTA VIRTUD Como resulta que en la situación de todas las sociedades que hemos revisado el progreso natural de la población ha sido constante y poderosamente controlado, y como parece evidente que ninguna forma de gobierno, ni planes de emigración, ni instituciones de benevolencia y ningún grado o dirección de la industria nacional puede impedir la acción continuada de un gran control sobre la población en una forma u otra, se deduce que debemos someternos a él como una inevitable ley de la naturaleza; y la única pregunta que permanece es cómo puede ejercerse ese control con el menor perjuicio posible a la virtud y felicidad de la sociedad humana.

    1. The education of Malthus
    Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) came from an intellectual family: His father, Daniel Malthus, was a moderately well-to-do English country gentleman, an enthusiastic believer in the optimistic ideas of the Enlightenment, and a friend of the philosophers Henry Rousseau, David Hume and William Godwin. The famous book on population by the younger Malthus grew out of conversations with his father.
