L a défaite de 1870 et l'augmentation du lectorat féminin amènent de nouvelles attentes narratives celles de personnages et de situations ancrées dans le réel. Comme l'explique Yves-Olivier Martin, " ". Le récit incantatoire et semi-féérique cède la place au roman de moeurs conformiste, l'adultère et l'erreur judiciaire succèdent à la fresque sociale. C'est le "roman de la victime" : orphelins en quête d'un foyer ( Les Deux orphelines de d'Ennery, Sans famille La Porteuse de pain Roger la Honte de Jules Mary, Le Maitre de forges de Georges Ohnet). La critique sociale est absente, seuls comptent l'apparence et l'honneur du nom. Ces textes se veulent gardiens de la morale : travail, famille (valeur fondamentale !), religion. Le crime capital est l'adultère de la femme ; quant à l'homme qui commet cette "folie passagère", il est généralement pardonné.

    Alcott, Louisa May (1832-88), Little Women (most popular girls' book ever written, first published in 1868; any edition will serve the purpose). Aunt March owns an odious Poodle. Sancho, a large white circus-Poodle with yellow eyes and a pink nose, is the clever guardian of his colleague, a young acrobat, Ben (see illustration, right); both escape from the big top and find a safe home in a quiet village where they work their way into everyone's hearts and have many adventures as co-heroes until a happy ending some 316 pages later. Dog Stories (Boston: DeWolfe, Fiske and Co.; undated, probably 1880's), 16pp. Illustrated with chromolithographs including the familiar "Giving Thanks" in which a girl prays over her breakfast tray under the fixed gaze of a fox terrier.
