Most Reverend Francis C. Kelley
A native Islander, Bishop Francis C. Kelley attended St. Dunstan’s in the 1880s. During his time at the College, Francis Kelley established the literary journal, The Collegium, acting as business manager, and in 1886 he launched the College’s first student newspaper. Following College, Kelley was the Founder and president of the Catholic Church Extension Society of the United States of America, later holding the same position in Canada. He was consecrated Bishop of Oklahoma in 1924. As a great diplomat and writer, he integrated truth among the organized bigotry in the South. Among his many literary pieces was his well-read autobiography, A Bishop Jots It Down. Bishop Kelley was one of the College’s best ambassadors in Canada and the US. Jacob Gould Schurman
Jacob Gould Schurman was an American educator, philosopher, and diplomat. Hailing from Freetown, PEI, Schurman enrolled at Prince of Wales College in 1870. He went on to further his education in Nova Scotia, London, Paris, Edinburgh, Heidelberg, Berlin, and Gottingen. Schurman later became a professor at Acadia and Dalhousie Colleges, and eventually at Cornell University. It was there that he became President in 1892, turning the small private college of Cornell into a major university. Schurman was founder and editor of Philosophical Review, and author of The Ethical Import of Darwinism (1887) and other philosophical works. He later served as United States Ambassador to Greece, Montenegro, China, and Germany.
