Personal Names Index to the Writings
of Alfred Russel Wallace

The following compilation represents an index of personal names (and a few organizations) that appeared in Wallace's writings. To produce the index I examined every page of every item listed in the "Wallace Bibliography" list, keeping track both of each name that appeared, and how many times it appeared. Only those names that Wallace referred to in more than simple citation terms are included (i.e., names that appeared as part of systematic synonymies, straight citations, etc. are not included unless Wallace also mentioned the persons involved in some further fashion in the main text of his writing). Once I had a "raw" list of names, I attempted to verify and/or distinguish the persons involved using various reference tools (Wallace often refers to people by their last name only, so a few errors are possible in this regard).
The editions of the books indexed here are as follows: Palm Trees of the Amazon S713 (original 1853 edition);

AFTER ALL, WHAT IS POETRY
By John R. Howard
AFTER ALL, WHAT IS POETRY?
By John Raymond Howard Perhaps a few examples may make this clearer, and show, too, the difficulty of the problem. a rhythmical expression of emotion and ideality Whatever stirs Macaulay in his brilliant essay on Milton, which, published in the Edinburgh Review his Independent By no means, then, to attempt a new definition where so many more competent have failed, we may nevertheless gather some points of certainty from the opinions cited above.
PREFACE
etc It is hoped that this gathering up of admirable fragments that should not be lost to familiar use, even though their original sources could find no proper place in the plan of the work at large, will prove to be helpfully suggestive, whether to the seeker for specific thoughts and expressions or to the general appreciative reader.

Excerpt
Critical attention to working-class poetry as a genre has suffered for many years from a tendency to ignore these works' original publication-history. It is easy to comment once again on the stereotypical qualities of a few readily accessible volumes of verse, but difficult to canvass thousands of unindexed pages of long-expired and barely extant periodicals, in search of working-class poets' original audiences, contexts, and modes of expression. Most working-class poets sent their work to local newspapers or journals, and many saw their poems "in print" in penny-newspapers and journals. Few seriously hoped to see them in hard covers, despite the support of a few sympathetic editors of working-class periodicals, but the sheer volume and variety of work they did publish belied facile views of these editors as instruments of Foucauldian repression. Several working-class periodical poets developed distinctive voices and identities that were cherished by their peers, and articulated ideals and grievances that were "personal" as well as "political" in the deepest senses of the words.

El mismo viejo truco
El libro (Ilusiones populares extraordinarias y la locura de las multitudes) fue escrito en 1841 por el autor, editor y músico escocés Charles MacKay (1814-1889) y desde entonces se ha reeditado varias veces —con leves cambios de título y adiciones varias—. Es una obra notable que trata de las debilidades del público y los desastres acarreados por la falta general de conocimiento acerca de cómo funciona el mundo. Siempre escéptico e incrédulo, MacKay se refirió a los a los practicantes del "magnetismo animal" —una difundida noción de curandería de la época— y concluyó que su idea de un "fluido magnético" que supuestamente fluía a través de los humanos era una tontería: Y aquí debe señalarse que los magnetizadores no arguyenque su fluido tenga validez universal; los fuertes y lossaludables no pueden ser magnetizados; los incrédulos nopueden ser magnetizados; quienes razonan sobre el asuntono pueden ser magnetizados; quienes creen en él firmementepueden ser magnetizados; los débiles de cuerpo pueden sermagnetizados, y los débiles de mente pueden sermagnetizados. Y en previsión de que, por una u otra causa, los individuos de estas últimas clases se resistan alencanto magnético, los apóstoles de la ciencia declaranque hay ocasiones en que ni siquiera ellos pueden serafectados;

By Charles Mackay
Dense on the stream the vapours lay,
Thick as wool on the cold highway;
Spongy and dim each lonely lamp
Shone o'er the streets so dull and damp; The moonbeam could not pierce the cloud That swathed the city like a shroud. There stood three shapes on the bridge alone, Three figures by the coping stone; Gaunt, and tall, and undefined, Spectres built of mist and wind; Changing ever in form and height, But black and palpable to sight. 'This is a city fair to see,' Whispered one of the fearful three;
