Biography MACKAY, CHARLES (1814-1889). —Poet and journalist, s. of a naval officer, was b. at Perth, and ed. at the Royal Caledonian Asylum, London, and at Brussels, but much of his early life was spent in France. Coming to London in 1834, he engaged in journalism, pub. Songs and Poems (1834), wrote a History of London, Popular Delusions, and a romance, Longbeard. His fame, however, chiefly rests upon his songs, some of which, including Cheer, Boys, Cheer, were in 1846 set to music by Henry Russell, and had an astonishing popularity. In 1852 he became ed. of the Illustrated London News, in the musical supplement to which other songs by him were set to old English music by Sir H.R. Bishop. M. acted as Times correspondent during the American Civil War, and in that capacity discovered and disclosed the Fenian conspiracy. He had the degree of LL.D. from Glasgow in 1846.

Table of Contents: THE SAME OLD SAME OLD The book And here it should be remarked that the magnetisers do not lay claim to a universal efficacy for their fluid; the strong and the healthy cannot be magnetised; the incredulous cannot be magnetised; those who reason upon it cannot be magnetised; those who firmly believe in it can be magnetised; the weak in body can be magnetised, and the weak in mind can be magnetised. And lest, from some cause or other, individuals of the latter classes should resist the magnetic charm, the apostles of the science declare that there are times when even they cannot be acted upon; the presence of one scorner or unbeliever may weaken the potency of the fluid and destroy its efficacy . In M. Deleuze's instructions to a magnetiser, he expressly says, "Never magnetise before inquisitive persons!" Yet the followers of this delusion claim for it the rank of a science!

Often compared to writers such as Kafka and Musil, Broch is the least well-known of the German modernists. Doubting the values of writing literature in the face of National Socialism, Broch turns increasingly to writing theoretical and political texts. After emigrating to the USA in 1939, during the 1940's Broch writes a voluminous, fragmentary Theory of Mass Psychosis , designed as a theory of democracy for previously fascist countries. The work, unpublished during his lifetime, was supported by the Rockefeller and the Guggenheim foundation.
