ARTHUR MACHEN

THE HOLY GRAIL
The Holy Grail is generally considered to be the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and the one used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch his blood as he hung on the cross. This significance, however, was introduced into the Arthurian legends by Robert de Boron in his verse romance Joseph d'Arimathie (sometimes also called Le Roman de l'Estoire dou Graal ), which was probably written in the last decade of the twelfth century or the first couple of years of the thirteenth. In earlier sources and in some later ones, the grail is something very different. The term "grail" comes from the Latin gradale Parzival Perceval Morte d'Arthur ) do achieve the quest. Tennyson is perhaps the author who has the greatest influence on the conception of the Grail quest for the modern English-speaking world through his Idylls and his short poem "Sir Galahad" . However, James Russell Lowell's "The Vision of Sir Launfal" , one of the most popular of nineteenth-century American poems gave to generations a democratized notion of the Grail quest as something achievable by anyone who is truly charitable. The notion that the Grail story originated in fertility myths was popularized by Jessie Weston in her book From Ritual to Romance , which was used by T. S. Eliot in the writing of

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a magical order which flourished in England at the turn of the century, is one of the most influential organizations in recent history to have had an effect on western magical beliefs and practices. Much of its ritual has been published in readily-accessible form; yet there still remain many vagaries and uncertainties about the Order, not least with regard to its members.
Most accounts focus primarily on the principal figures who played a role in its founding and turbulent history, S. L. Mathers, Wynn Westcott, W. B. Yeats, A. E. Waite and Aleister Crowley. Of these men and their machinations in the sometimes bitter power-play which constituted so great a part of the Order’s history, so much has been written elsewhere that it would be pointless to discuss it in detail here. Instead, I want to try to clarify the possible connections of various writers of weird fiction whose names have been linked at one time or another with the Order of the Golden Dawn. Some of these indubitably were members of the Order; for others there is some evidence to suggest links, but no conclusive proof; and for several writers whose names have been put forward, there is little or no evidence at all.

Of Things Near and Far
Of things near and far Arthur Machen (1863-1947). An interesting essay The White People Violet Books site brought his writing back to the forefront of my attention for the first time in quite a while. It was very dark in the room. He seemed by slow degrees to awake from a long and heavy torpor, from an utter forgetfulness, and as he raised his eyes he could scarcely discern the pale whiteness of the paper on the desk before him. He remembered something of a gloomy winter afternoon, of driving rain, of gusty wind: he had fallen asleep over his work, no doubt, and the night had come down. Machen began his literary career in the 1880s, as a pasticheur and translator (he translated, among other works, the Memoirs of Casanova), before going on to attain a small measure of notoriety as the author of some luridly melodramatic horror stories, such as The Great God Pan and The Inmost Light (published together in 1894). The former tale can be found entire in most Project Gutenberg archives. He lay back in his chair, wondering whether it were late; his eyes were half closed, and he did not make the effort and rouse himself. He could hear the stormy noise of the wind, and the sound reminded him of the half-forgotten days. He thought of his boyhood, and the old rectory, and the great elms that surrounded it. There was something pleasant in the consciousness that he was still half dreaming; he knew he could wake up whenever he pleased, but for the moment he amused himself by the pretence that he was a little boy again, tired with his rambles and the keen air of the hills. He remembered how he would sometimes wake up in the dark at midnight, and listen sleepily for a moment to the rush of the wind straining and crying amongst the trees, and hear it beat upon the walls, and then he would fall to dreams again, happy in his warm, snug bed.

59. THE OFFICIAL CTHULHU MYTHOS FAQ - Part 1
Arthur Machen (18631947) A Welsh author whose greatest work may be hisautobiographical The Hill of Dreams. Horror fans know him best for his short tales
http://www.necfiles.org/part1.htm
The Official Cthulhu Mythos FAQ
Maintained by Daniel Harms
Version 1.1
Part 1. Introduction
1.1. What is the Cthulhu Mythos? The Cthulhu Mythos comprises a "shared world" in which various authors set works of horror, with some overlap with the fields of fantasy, science fiction, and mainstream. A reader might compare this to such properties as Star Trek or Star Wars, but the Cthulhu Mythos is not controlled by some central authority that commissions books, maintains continuity, and so forth. Rather, authors use elements from each others' tales in ways which complement (and sometimes conflict) with other's stories. All of these authors, in one way or another, are paying homage to H. P. Lovecraft Some have objected to the term "Cthulhu Mythos", as it was not coined by Lovecraft himself, but by August Derleth . These people point out that "Cthulhu" is hardly the most important creature in the Mythos universe, and have proposed an astonishing array of names to describe the same pantheon. Still, most fans use "Cthulhu Mythos", and it will continue to be used here.
