Arthur Machen Machen was a Welshman, the son of an Anglican priest, who moved to London as a young man, working as a clerk and tutor while attempting to start a career in journalism. He never went to university but, living from his father's inheritance for a number of years, immediately began an illustrious writing career with the publication of what came to be several well-known works of supernatural fiction, such as T he Great God Pan . (He also published a somewhat racy version of Casanova's Memoirs Order of the Twilight Star . An excerpt: I like the story; but there was not on atom of truth in it. Its true date of origin was [1880-1 5?] at the earliest. The "Cipher Manuscript" was written on paper that bore the watermark of 1809 in ink that had a faded appearance. But it contained information that could not possibly have been know to any living being in the year 1809, that was not known to any living being till twenty years later. It was, no doubt a forgery of the early 'eighties. Its originators must have some knowledge of Freemasonry; but so ingeniously was this occult fraud 'put upon the market' that, to the best of my belief, the flotation remains a mystery to this day. But what an entertaining mystery: and, after all, it did nobody any harm. . . .Any critical mind, with a twinge of occult reading, should easily have concluded that here was no ancient order from the whole nature and substance of its ritual and doctrine. For ancient rituals, whether orthodox or heterodox, are found on one mythos and on one mythos only. The are grouped about some fact, actual or symbolic, as the ritual of Freemasonry is said to have at its centre certain events connected to the building of King Solomon's Temple, and they keep within their limits. But the Twilight Star embraced all mythologies and all mysteries of all races and all ages, and '

Arthur Machen Collection
Arthur Machen, who was born in Caerleon in 1863, became known as a writer of tales of horror, evil and the supernatural. His works include 'The Great God Pan', 'The Hill of Dreams', and 'The Three Imposters'. The inspiration for some of his most famous books came from Wales, and the Gwent of his childhood, where he was deeply influenced by Welsh folklore. His most famous story 'The Bowman' concerning the victory of Mons, first appeared in 'The London Evening News', and immediately became a bestseller when published as a book.
The collection, which has been developed since Machen's death in 1947, is the largest in Britain and second largest in the world, and contains approximately 600 items. It covers the works of Arthur Machen, and other material relating to the writer including cuttings, photographs and ephemera.

RITUAL AND OTHER STORIES by Arthur Machen, With an Introduction by R.B. Russell. Leyburn, UK; Tartarus Press; 2004. Hardcover edition.
'The Flower-Tunicked Priest of Nightmare', Arthur Machen (1863-1947) is best known for his horror and supernatural fiction and has been a cult writer since the 1890s. The publication of this revised third edition of Ritual and Other Stories reflects the continued interest in Machen's work, and collects together his more elusive short fiction. Through the publication of Ritual and its companion 'best of' volume Tales of Horror and the Supernatural, Tartarus has now reissued all Machen's short stories in accessible form.
As R.B. Russell writes in his new Introduction, 'the great strength of Ritual is that it spans Machen's career and thus reveals his development as a writer'. As well as two early pieces from the 1880s, Ritual contains from the 1890s stories that compare well with Machen's better-known decadent work, such as The Great God Pan. These include the exquisite prose-poem 'Rus in Urbe' (1890), and the stories from the Ornaments in Jade collection, written in the 1890s but not published until 1924. Machen's much underrated later work is represented by, amongst others, 'The Tree of Life' (1936), 'one of the most sympathetic stories Machen ever wrote', and the title story 'Ritual', which although written in 1937 'could have been penned at any time in his career, and is undeniably Machen at his best'.
