WINGFOLD BOOKS George MacDonald: Beautiful Thoughts
Edited by Barbara Amell
George MacDonald (1824-1905) was one of the most important and influential writers of the 19th century.
Most of his books have recently been reprinted; however, his anthology Beautiful Thoughts has remained unavailable for over a century.
First published in 1895, the book was heralded in the press for its "helpfulness as a spiritual companion"; only two US libraries are currently listed in possession of the volume.
In addition to the original contents, this collection also contains an 1895 review of the anthology, a 1905 biographical tribute to MacDonald by his friend W. Garrett Horder, and an introduction by Barbara Amell.

George MacDonald The novels of George MacDonald all have a common link. I believe his purpose in writing is for characters and his readers to experience spiritual growth by witnessing the New Testament as lived through others. " It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling."- Elizabeth Yates, an editor for one of MacDonald’s novels. MacDonald’s main characters live out and apply the word, the lessons, and the life and character of Christ with excellence. The characters become part of the readers life, forever to be remembered and easily recalled when the reader finds himself in similar situations. MacDonald’s flavorful words and ability make the stories so real and captivates his readers. They left me encouraged, strengthened and caused me to question priorities, examining What is most important? What is my purpose? His books inspire the readers to be more thankful and more helpful to others. -mystical creatures
    -humans with such unreal powers
-spiritual beings that are good but yet detestable in shape, form or appearance

George MacDonald "Macdonald removes from our thinking every vestige of the image of God as a tyrant who is pleased with nothing less than the humanly impossible, and then who condemns man for not achieving it." Rolland Hein George MacDonald, Scottish Victorian novelist, began his adult life as a clergyman and always considered himself a poet first of all. His unorthodox views resulted in a very short career in the pulpit, after which he turned to writing in earnest. He initially attracted notice for poetry and his adult fantasy, Phantastes, but once he turned to the writing of realistic novels in the early 1860s, his name became widely known throughout Great Britain and the U.S. Over the next thirty years he wrote some fifty books, including, in addition to the novels, more poetry, short stories, fantasy, sermons, essays, and a full-length study of Hamlet. His influential body of work placed him alongside the great Victorian men of letters and his following was vast. MacDonald died in 1905 and his reputation gradually declined in the 20th century. Most of his books eventually went out of print as his name drifted from memory. A brief flurry of interest in his work was generated in 1924 at the centenary of his birth, resulting in several new editions of certain titles and the first major biography of his life, George MacDonald and His Wife, by his son Greville MacDonald Obscure though his name gradually became, however, MacDonald was read and revered by an impressive gallery of well-known figures, both in his own time and in the years since. A few of these include G.K. Chesterton (who called him “one of the three or four greatest men of the 19th century”), W.H. Auden (who said that MacDonald was “one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century”), Oswald Chambers (“…how I love that man!”), and most notably C.S. Lewis. In spite of such a following, however, MacDonald's reputation gradually declined throughout the 20th century.

George MacDonald (1824-1905) is best known as a novelist, the author of fantasies such as Phantastes (1858) and Lilith (1895) and realistic works like David Elginbrod (1863) and Alec Forbes of Howglen (1865). He was also, however, a respected religious teacher. He pastored only one churchTrinity Congregational Church, Arundel, 1850-1853before turning to novels and poems, but he continued to preach and publish sermons after achieving literary fame. Until recently, our knowledge of MacDonald's homiletics was limited to the sermons he wrote for publication: The Miracles of Our Lord The Hope of the Gospel Unspoken sermons (3 vols, 1867-1889) and the discourses he incorporated into many of his novels. We now have records of the sermons he preached as well: J. Joseph Flynn and David Edwards have located 20 transcripts in Victorian periodicals and published them as George MacDonald in the Pulpit: The 'Spoken' sermons of George MacDonald (Whitethorn, CA: Johannesen Printing and Publishing, 1996).

New book search (click here) Review Summary of George MacDonald: An Anthology by author C.S. Lewis George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a preacher, novelist, poet, and teacher. His children's books (eg, The Princess and the Goblin) are still popular, but his other works are less well known. Prof. C. S. Lewis, one of the great scholars of English literature, was much influenced by MacDonald, and referred to him as 'my master'. In this fascinating anthology with bibliography he extracts a daily meditation from the whole range of MacDonald's works, but particularly the Christian works, and encapsulates many deep aspects of the faith in a few pithy words. The preface of about twelve pages will be interest to Lewis enthusiasts as it explains the depth of the influence that Lewis felt from the man and his 'mythological' creative style.
