[For an explanation of the conventions of this Index, see Section III of the Introduction] Abbott Abercromby , Julia Janet Georgina, 4th Lady Abercromby (d. 1915). Sister of Robert Haldane-Duncan, 3rd Lord Camperdown (q.v.), who married the 4th Lord Abercromby in 1858. Artist (exhibited at R.A. 1888), whose portrait of BJ, painted in 1892, was reckoned to be an especially good likeness. She probably met BJ through her brother, and although very little is said of her in the biographies, the fact that she was the recipient of some of his more personal letters suggests that she became a close friend of BJ. Acland , Sir Henry Wentworth (1815-1900), Radcliffe Librarian 1851-1900, Curator of Oxford University Galleries and of the Bodleian Library, Regius Professor of Medicine 1858-1894. Influential scientist, with special interest in medical matters. He did much to reform the teaching of medicine and other sciences in Oxford, and took a leading role in the campaigns to build the University Museum and the Radcliffe Science Library. Although he and BJ first met in 1844 through the agency of Sir Benjamin Brodie the younger (q.v.), there was little friendship between them for most of their lives; indeed some of BJ's references to him in letters suggests that he actively disliked him. Only during BJ's Vice-Chancellorship did both men become good friends, and Acland did much to look after BJ's declining health in his last years.

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

    Scottish Historical Figures
This page lists a very few of the Scots who have made their mark on the world over the ages. Scotland is a small country but, for all that, Scots have had an exceptional influence on the world. Many are the factors which have contributed to this centuries-old phenomenon. Some we can be pleased about, others are less worthy of broadcast, but interesting nonetheless: the poverty of the country in times past, encouraging those with ambition to seek their fortunes outwith the country's borders, the forced emigration of large numbers from the Highlands by greedy landowners more interested in money than responsibility, but also the remarkable educational system all had their part to play. The unique educational system which Scots enjoyed for hundreds of years gave them the intellectual tools to tackle the world. From the 16th century until modern times education was available to a far higher percentage of the population in Scotland than in any other country.
Some of the people described are very famous, some less so, some not well known at all. I've just chosen a few who've captured my interest at particular times. The selection is therefore an arbitrary one. If you wish to see someone included you can contact me here . Send me the name and some information about the person.
George Buchanan 1506-1582 More Famous Than Shakespeare Born at Killearn, Stirlingshire. The son of a minor Stirlingshire laird, he was educated at the local parish school until fourteen. He then studied at St.Andrews and Paris under John Major (see below). When he was prosecuted in Scotland as a heretic he fled to England. He journeyed to France and then Portugal, where the Inquisition imprisoned him for a year and a half. During the years 1551-1561 he was in Paris. By 1566 he was back in Scotland and principal of St.Leonard's College at St.Andrews. He became James VI's personal tutor. He exercised a very strong influence over the King, although James did not share Buchanan's severe Calvinist beliefs. His fame was not based on merely one area. The greatest Latinist of his day, (Latin was the universal language of scholarship at that time) he wrote Latin plays and poems, tracts against

Part VII: Berlin and the Chance for a Summit; March 1959 to August 1959
Chapter 18: "These extremist approaches" Dear Allen: Thank you very much for your note of June twentieth, enclosing the copy of the often-quoted letter written by Macaulay in 1857. Macaulay was of course a very shrewd observer. Nevertheless he could not have foreseen the great changes that would have come about in any democratic government, particularly our own, as a result of the achievement of higher educational levels than obtained a hundred years ago. On top of that we have developed numerous programs calculated to retard the progress of recessions and to lessen the danger than any such recession could speed rapidly into a catastrophic depression. Finally, I think it is fair to say that he thought of capitalistic nations as comprising mainly a few rich people with a great horde of exploited working men and women, with the relatively weak middle class helplessly caught between. Actually what Macaulay then wrote of as the "working class" is now the middle class.
