Key Figures CHAPMAN, John (1801-1854):
Born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Chapman started in manufacturing and later turned to political writing. He was instrumental in the Great Indian Peninsular Railway project (1844-46), and published the popular "Principles of Indian Reform" in March 1853, as well as several other articles on India. He died suddenly of cholera in September 1854. CLIVE, Robert, First Baron Clive of Plassey (1725-1774): Clive became the Governor of Bengal in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey, which consolidated Bengal under British rule. He also systematically extracted funds from the puppet Nawab (ruler) who was established after the battle. This led to his being tried for corruption in England from 1767 to 1773. CORNWALLIS, Charles, First Marquis and second Earl Cornwallis (1738-1805): Governor-General of India (1786-1793), Cornwallis implemented many reforms in the East India Company's organization to counteract financial corruption. The East India Company was divided into three branches (revenue, judicial and commercial) and salaries were raised. In order to strengthen relations between British authority and Indian landowners, land revenue assessment was assigned to native zamindars, who were expected to pay taxes to the British. HASTINGS, Warren (1732-1818):

Thomas Gray (1716-1771)
On a Favourite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes
T WAS on a lofty vase's side,
Where China's gayest art had dyed
The azure flowers that blow;
Demurest of the tabby kind,
The pensive Selima reclined,
Gazed on the lake below. Her conscious tail her joy declared;
The fair round face, the snowy beard,
The velvet of her paws,
Her coat, that with the tortoise vies,
Her ears of jet, and emerald eyes,
She saw; and purr'd applause. Still had she gazed; but 'midst the tide Two angel forms were seen to glide, The Genii of the stream: Their scaly armour's Tyrian hue Thro' richest purple to the view Betray'd a golden gleam. The hapless Nymph with wonder saw: A whisker first and then a claw, With many an ardent wish, She stretch'd in vain to reach the prize. What female heart can gold despise? What Cat 's averse to fish? Presumptuous Maid! with looks intent Again she stretch'd, again she bent, Nor knew the gulf between. (Malignant Fate sat by, and smiled.) The slipp'ry verge her feet beguiled

"How did mankind ever come by the idea of liberty? What a grand thought it was!" G.C. Lichtenberg (1799) Foreword by Paul Johnson As someone who, in a small way, has tried his best to advance the cause of human liberty through books, articles, broadcasts, and lectures over many decades now, I commend this book to the American people. Jim Powell is a stalwart champion of liberty. He is a man of great energy, determination, obstinancy, and courage, and all of these qualities have gone into his work on behalf of liberty. He believes, as I do, that worthwhile abstract ideas are best promoted by the study of the lives of those who embodied them. That is what he has done in this book. I do not agree with all of it. Some of the people he presents as heroes and heroines of liberty in this narrative exhibited serious flaws of character and judgment, and their lives and writings and sayings should be studied with caution. But that is how one should approach all history, not least biographical history. What I am sure of is that anyone who reads The Triumph of Liberty
