to Zachary Macaulay, an avid activist against the slave trade. Highly intelligent for his age, Macaulay was a passionate reader by the age of three. Macaulay began writing poems about historical figures at the early age of eight. Much of his writings were used as stepping stones for his later publication of the Lays of Ancient Rome (Cavendish, 53). Macaulay attended Trinity College, in Cambridge, and furthered his political views and service as a missionary. He began to strengthen his resolve for utilitarianism and was influenced by Jeremy Bentham and Joseph Priestley. Macaulay is best known for his History of England , published in five volumes.
After graduating, Babington went to work as a lawyer. During his early career years, there was not much time for Macaulay to write, as he was caught up in the politics of the British Nation. His involvement in Indian affairs led to him to create many position papers on such topics as education and legal issues in this British holding.

Large View Macaulay, Thomas Babington (1800-1859) first Baron of Rothley, British parliament member, Fellow of Trinity College (Cambridge), regular contributor to the Edinburgh Review, jurist, Commissioner and Secretary of the board of control (1832), and British Cabinet member (1839-41). Macaulay was made the baron of Rothley in 1854. His celebrity in British politics and literature is affirmed by his final rest at Westminister Abbey. In contemporary Europe Lord Macaulay was well known as an outstanding intellectual of the liberal school and an eminent historian. Most notable among his historical works are History of England Laws of Ancient Rome and History, 4 vols (1855). His collected works run into many volumes. robert clive and warren hastings Macaulay criticised many of their actions, but eventually accepted them as torch bearers of European civilisation. He was in accord with those who considered company rule in India as a civilising influence. Though a liberal and an intellectual of a very high order, Macaulay failed to comprehend the problems of the Indians under British rule. Ignorant as he was of Indian languages and institutions and unacquainted with the problems of the general people of the country, his scathing remarks about the character of the Indians tended to be populist and chauvinistic. In spite of his great intellectual attainments, he could not rise above the racist attitude to non-European cultures. Ironically, today Macaulay is mentioned by South Asian scholars not so much for his great contribution to the development of the Indian Penal Code but for his negative attitude to oriental languages and cultures, an attitude that lacked understanding and sensibility. Administrative/Biographical History
The sixth generation of Longmans, Robert Guy and William L., became partners in 1909. They took a keen interest in expanding the overseas branches. Educational publishing continued to be the mainstay of the firm during the twentieth century, but their literary reputation was maintained, with authors such as Stella Gibbons, Mary Renault and Thornton Wilder, and later Gavin Maxwell, Stevie Smith and the children's writer Leon Garfield. Other useful earners were Roget's Thesaurus and Gray's Anatomy
Scope and Content
Longman premises suffered from two fires, the first in 1861 and the second in the Blitz in December 1940. The archives which remain are therefore not complete, but do form an extensive collection. They are divided into three parts

Yet, for almost two centuries, the British were able to rule two-thirds of the subcontinent directly, and exercise considerable leverage over the Princely States that accounted for the remaining one-third. While the strategy of divide and conquer was used most effectively, an important aspect of British rule in India was the psychological indoctrination of an elite layer within Indian society who were artfully tutored into becoming model British subjects. This English-educated layer of Indian society was craftily encouraged in absorbing values and notions about themselves and their land of birth that would be conducive to the British occupation of India, and furthering British goals of looting India's physical wealth and exploiting it's labour. In 1835, Thomas Macaulay articulated the goals of British colonial imperialism most succinctly:

Thomas Macaulay Richard Whately (1787-1863) was a contemporary of Jane Austen, a scholar, and a churchman. He was professor of political economy at Oxford and would rise to the position of archbishop of Dublin. He is remembered as a critic of the use of dogma in theology. He also knew how to read as he demonstrated with this review of Jane Austen's last two novels. I will quote a very small part of the much longer essay. I recommend the full version to you; the essay was written over 175 years ago, but contains an excellent analysis of novels in general and Jane Austen's novels in particular. Among the many good things that I will not quote is the best analysis of Mansfield Park that I have ever seen. (I do not reproduce Whately's spelling of either "Shakspeare" or "Austin".)
Among the authors of this school there is no one superior, if equal, to the lady whose last production is now before us, and whom we have much regret in finally taking leave of: her death (in the prime of life, considered as a writer) being announced in this the first publication to which her name is affixed. ...
