EDWARD ROBERT BULWER-LYTTON, 1ST EARL LYTTON
LYTTON, EDWARD ROBERT BULWER-LYTTON , 1ST EARL or (1831-1891), English diplomatist and poet, was the only son of the 1st Baron Lytton. He was born in Hertford Street, Mayfair, on the 8th of Noiember 1831. Robert Lytton and his sister were brought up as children principally by a Miss Green. In 1840 the boy was sent to a school at Twickenham, in 1842 to another at Brighton, and in 1845 to Harrow. From his earlfest childhood Lytton read voraciously and wrote copiously, quickly developing a genuine and intense love of literature anda remarkable facility of expression. In 1849 he left Harrow and studied for a year at Bonn with an English tutor, and on his return with another tutor in England In 1850 he entered the diplomatic service as unpaid attache to his uncle, Sir Henry Buiwer, who was then minister at Washington. To: Lucile Publishers Owen Meredith's Lucile A Brief History of the Project Lucile entered our consciousness soon after we moved to Tulsa in late 1984. We began to note the book, always in different editions, in antique shop after antique shop, usually one of a very few books amidst objects of other kinds. Since they were typically well preserved and rarely priced beyond five dollars, we began to buy the more interesting of them as examples of 19th century cloth binding styles. We then began to look for them in bookshops as we traveled around the midwest a splendid silver binding (Philadelphia: Altemus, 1896) was found at an early date in Wichita, Kansas. We soon came to the conclusion that every bookseller could be expected to have at least one copy of Lucile It seems possible to distinguish good Lucile towns from less good. We found five editions in New Orleans (in four different bookshops), two in one afternoon in Evanston, Illinois, and while overnight in Omaha, another five editions in two shops: two "padded" versions in a "collector's gallery" and three editions in a bookstoreeach in a different location (one in poetry, one in literature, the third among $.50 books on remote upstairs shelves). We found six editions in three Spokane bookstores, plus an additional edition in an antique shop there. Copies turned up regularly at Tulsa's largest used book store, First Editions Book Shop, and an annual visit to Tulsa's Three B's nearly always yielded a copy. By contrast, a day of hard work in 1988, thoroughly scouting a half dozen shops in Philadelphia turned up nary a copy (nor did a return visit in 1991); David Szewczyk, however, has since repaired Philadelphia's reputation by offering several copies and donating others.

http://banglapedia.search.com.bd/HT/L_0143.htm
Lytton, Lord Edward Robert (1831-1891) Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1876 to 1880. Son of Edward Bulwer Lytton, the novelist, Edward Robert Lytton was educated at Harrow in England and at Bonn in Germany. A man of letters and an eloquent speaker, he served as a member of the diplomatic core in a number of European capitals. His years in India were eventful. A severe famine raged over most of south India including Madras, Bombay, Hyderabad and Mysore for two years from 1876-1878. In the second year the famine also struck parts of Central India and the Punjab, and a heavy toll of lives consequently perished. The relief measures cost over ten crores of rupees and due to the failure of crops there was great loss of revenue. Lord Lytton's government, therefore, appointed a famine Commission under Richard Strachey to enquire into the causes of the famine and relief measures taken to mitigate the sufferings of the people. On the basis of the commission report a famine code was drawn up which laid down certain regulations relating to famine measures in the future. The government efforts to save life proved inadequate yet the viceroy held a magnificent Darbar in Delhi in 1877, to celebrate the assumption of the title of the Empress of India by Queen Victoria
