ir Edward G. D. Bulwer-Lytton, the youngest of the three sons In 1820, at his mother's instigation, the London firm of J. Hatchard and Son published the Byronic Ismael: An Oriental Tale, with Other Poems , for which, even though sales were poor, young Edward received acknowledgement from Sir Walter Scott. The following year, Edward honed his mathematics skills under the tutelage of an Oxford scholar named Thomson, and in 1822 entered Trinity College, Cambridge, during the Easter term, transferring to Trinity Hall as a fellow-commoner in order to be excused from attending lectures. Through the Union Debating Society he became acquainted with the university's leading undergraduates, including the future historian Thomas Babington Macaulay , Alexander Cockburn (later, a chief justice), W. M. Praed, Charles Villiers, F. D. Maurice, Charles Buller, and Benjamin Hall Kennedy, who years later would piece together Bulwer's novel from his extant notes. While still at Cambridge, still working in the Byronic mode, he published Delmour; or, A Tale of a Sylphid, and Other Poems

Introduction and Summary
Some time ago I began reading the novel, Zanoni , by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Near the very beginning of the novel, I read the following passage: “Plato here expresses four kinds of mania, by which I desire to understand enthusiasm and the inspiration of the gods: Firstly, the musical, secondly, the telestic or mystic; thirdly, the prophetic; and fourthly, that which belongs to love.” Well, I did not recall anything about “Plato’s four manias,” and so I did a quick search of the Internet, and came up with the following paragraph, from the article, “ Atumpan Drummers and Marsyas ’ Flute: Exploring Parallels Between African and Greek Conceptions of State” (1995): “In the Phaedrus we read the following ironic words from the Western world’s first great rational philosopher: "Our greatest blessings come to us by way of madness [

Drama takes stage in Britain
Fine arts professor discovers lost 133-year-old play; students invited to perform it at historic English estate By Dennis Urquhart
Research Communications A University of Calgary drama professor and his students will be in a jolly-good mood this summer in England, where they will be staging the world premier of a newly discovered play written in 1867 by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Lord David Cobbold, a descendent of Bulwer-Lytton and owner of Knebworth House, invited Yzereef to return to England with his students in July 2000 to stage the world premiere of the play to coincide with a conference on Bulwer-Lytton. Sixteen U of C students, ranging from first-year undergraduate to graduate students, were cast by audition and will perform The Captives. The student-actors have been organizing fundraisers, such as cabarets, to finance the $30,000 trip. Various U of C and community grants are also funding the project, which is still about $8,000 short, says Yzereef. Knebworth House is also somewhat famous. Royals and dignitaries have stayed at the estate (Winston Churchill used to paint in the banquet room). More recently, scenes from movies such as Batman and Eyes Wide Shut have been filmed there. As well, huge outdoor rock concerts are held on the grounds. The Captives will be the first international endeavour for the U of C drama department. Yzereef says the international exposure will be beneficial to both the university and the drama students.

Learn more about the NACO Normalization Service
OCLC Research's NACO Normalization Service enables systems to convert names and other text strings to a format more conducive to machine comparison and sorting.
Try it out
Go to the OCLC Research NACO Normalization Service Enter the string of characters to be normalized. Typically this would be the name of an author or other entity associated with a work:
  • U.S. Dept. of Agriculture
The service also can accept data in the MARCMaker format:
  • $aLytton, Edward Bulwer Lytton $cBaron $d1803-1873
The demo will return the text string's normalized form:
  • alain rene lesage lesage, alain rene u s dept of agriculture
Why we developed this
This service is used to prepare text strings for machine comparison and sorting, according to the NACO normalization rules. These rules were developed for comparing name data. An example of such a comparison is determining whether a particular name already exists in an authority file such as the OCLC Research LC Name Authority Service . However, any kind of text string can be normalized by this service. We have found it useful in working with title strings as well as names.
