Sir John Clanvowe, Geoffrey Chaucer, and James I of Scotland
John M. Bowers
If Chaucer had lived long enough to write only the first installment of the Canterbury Tales , the Knight's Tale would still occupy a privileged place in our tradition as a vernacular epic reaching back to Boccaccio's Teseida as an early instance of Italian humanism and looking forward to the English Renaissance as the source for Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream and The Two Noble Kinsmen . I want to trace the first half-century of this tale's public life. Read by Sir John Clanvowe when it was originally composed during the 1380s, the story of Palamon and Arcite reflected the homosocial values displayed by Richard II in his relationship with Robert de Vere. Then Chaucer adapted the story as the

Geoffrey Chaucer
born c. 1342/43, London?, Eng.
died Oct. 25, 1400, London
English poet. Of middle-class birth, he was a courtier, diplomat, and civil servant, trusted by three kings in his active and varied career, and a poet only by avocation. His first important poem, Book of the Duchesse (1369/70), was a dream vision elegy for the duchess of Lancaster. In the 1380s he produced mature works, including The Parliament of Fowls , a dream vision for St. Valentine's Day about a conference of birds choosing their mates; the fine tragic verse romance Troilus and Criseyde ; and the unfinished dream vision Legend of Good Women . His best-known work, the unfinished Canterbury Tales St. Thomas Becket in Canterbury as a framing device for a highly varied collection of stories; not only the most famous literary work in Middle English, it is one of the finest works of English literature. In this and other works Chaucer established the southern English dialect as England's literary language, and he is regarded as the first great English poet.

    From Manuscript to Digital Record
The following report describes the process of transforming the text of a medieval manuscript or a fragment of it into human and machine readable code for display on the World Wide Web. During a twelve week work study in the Humanities Computing and Media Center of the University of Victoria I tried to acquire the necessary computer technical skills to do a trial mark up project using Extensible Mark up Language (XML). As a student of German and Medieval Studies, I had virtually no computing knowledge beyond the general essay writing and emailing skills at the beginning of the project. This report will focus not on the manuscript chosen but on the process of marking it up to produce the results . It will center on successes, limits and failures encountered in the process of applying the Berkeley Digital Scriptorium DTD and XML tags for the mark up of medieval documents. Based on those limits and failures additions were made to the existing XML tag set and the DTD as well as new developments for the rendering of the tagged text for viewing in a browser. The manuscript that presented itself as most appropriate to our purpose of marking up a medieval text was the University of Victoria's Special Collections SC 070 Fall of Princes (ca. 2nd half of 15th c.) by John Lydgate (ca.1370-1449). Neither a manuscript description nor a genealogy of the text will be provided here. For a short description of the manuscript see A. Edwards "Lydgate's Fall of Princes; A 'Lost' Manuscript Found"
