Chaucer Chronology: His Life and Times
Chaucer lived in very exciting times and he had an extremely active and interesting life. There are quite a few informative chronologies of Chaucer's life and times but since they are scattered all over the Web, I have decided to consolidate them into one master chronology. I admit this is mostly for my own use (so I can place people and events in their proper order without clicking back and forth between different webpages), but I hope this project might be of use to other Chaucer fanatics as well.
Note that I have also created a helpful companion site to this chronology for anyone who wants to find out more about the people, places, and events included here. Both the the chronology site and its counterpart are works-in-progress, so if you notice any inconsistencies, omissions, or errors, please contact me
The basic structure of this chronology owes much to the Harvard Chaucer chronology (indeed, many of the links will take you to material on the Harvard website), but I have added to this chronology my own supplementary material on certain people/events not included that page (e.g., details about Chaucer's involvement in the Scrope-Grosvenor controversy, other historical/literary events).
If you happen to read medieval Latin, Norman French and Spanish and enjoy wading through legal documentation, the voluminous

Religious and devotional mss. Pragmatic mss. Late Medieval literary mss John Gower Vox Clamantis , etc
England: c.1400 MS Hunter 59 (T.2.17)
'Moral Gower', as Chaucer calls him in Troilus and Criseyde , used the Peasants Revolt of 1381 in his Vox clamantis to describe the faults of the various classes of society. The earlier portion of the work contains a vivid account of the uprising in the form of an allegory; the remainder is a version in Latin of the strictures that he had already made in a 30,000 line poem in French, the Speculum meditantes In this copy of the revised version of the Vox clamantis and Chronica tripertita , the text is preceded by a full page representation of the author firing his shafts at the world (folio 6v). This globe is composed of the elements of air, earth and water in three compartments. A second illustration (folio 129r) includes a shield with the Gower arms supported by two flying angels, with a cloth-covered bier at the foot of the page; Gower did not die, however, until 1408, some years after this manuscript was written. There is a palimpsest of a third illustration on folio 131v, but its details have been lost.

A bit of History
One of the most charming towns of the South, it has a broad High Street lined with Trees, Shops and dwellings nearly all with their original faacades dating from Elizabethan to Georgian times. The Georgian predominates, with most of the houses being built between 1720 and 1760. The town also has many fine old inns. Please see the Eating pages. The tower of the parish church of St Mildreds dominates the town. Built in the 15th century, it rises more than 100ft above the ground, and from the top on a clear day it is possible to see right across the Weald to the Channel coast. It is even possible to see shipping on the channel and the French Coast. A fine view indeed. The tower is open only at certain times of the year.

British History (15 th th Centuries)
15th century 16th century 17th century 18th century th century The reign of Henry IV (1421-1471), who married Margaret, daughter of René of Anjou, was marked by defeats in France and the loss of the markets of Guyenne and Flanders. At the beginning of the l5 th century royal patronage declined. A grave political crisis, the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485), ruined the aristocracy and strengthened the power of the throne. With the Tudors (Henry VII, 1485-1509) commercial and industrial development began. John Lydgate (c. 1370 - c. 1450) adapted Boccaccio. Printing was established in the second half of the l5 th century. John Dunstable (1370-1453), mathematician, astronomer and musician of great melodic invention and clever counterpoint, a disciple of the Italian composers of madrigals, was to have a great influence. th century Absolutism of the monarchy triumphed with Henry VIII, 1509-1547; Edward VI, died 1553; Mary Tudor, died 1558 (married Philip II of Spain; loss of Calais, 1558); Elizabeth, died 1603. Maritime power developed (voyages of Drake, 1577; of Walter Raleigh, 1586 and 1595; annihilation of the enormous Spanish Armada, 1588). The religious problems determined politics. Henry VIII broke away from Catholicism, 1535. By the Act of Supremacy, the king became head of the Church of England. The monasteries were suppressed (1536-1539). Catholicism, restored under Mary, unleashed a persecution of the Protestants. Humanism was very much alive around Henry VIII; Cardinal Wolsey (d. 1530), Thomas More (d. 1535) were friends of Erasmus who visited England between 1495 and 1514 (In Praise of Folly, 1509) as did Luis Vives (about 1522-1530). The poets Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard wrote sonnets in the Italian manner. The Elizabethan period was the golden age of English literature (Spenser, Philip Sidney, the 'poets of love') with Christopher Marlowe and the genius Shakespeare. Music held a high place; Henry VIII was a composer. The school of virginals and madrigals was important; W. Byrd (1543-1623) was the organist of the Chapel Royal.

Home 13.6 Early 15th-century poets Thomas Hoccleve ( c Thomas Hoccleve spent most of his life in Westminster and London as a clerk in the office of the Privy Seal. His literary works fall into the period from 1402 to 1422. Many of his poems are traditional complaints and moral writings, but he is very appealing in his ‘autobiographical’ writings, most of all in La Male Regle de Thomas Hoccleve , in which he claims to tell events of his own private life and extravagant tours through the London pubs. After 1416, he obviously suffered a period of mental illness, about which he speaks in a series of poems linked by dialogues with a friend. In a way, Hoccleve can be read as the most personal author writing in the period, although we do not know much about his actual life. John Lydgate ( c In contrast to Hoccleve, John Lydgate was a very prolific author who produced more than 100,000 lines of poetry. Lydgate was a monk in the Benedictine abbey at Bury St Edmunds where he remained for the greatest part of his life. Of Lydgate’s voluminous works, we can only mention a few examples here, such as The Troy Book, The Siege of Thebes
