and E.V. Lucas (1868-1938) O Pearson's Weekly woke up to the disturbance at last, and Mrs. Lynn Linton contributed an article entitled "What Women Might Do" to the Queen . A paper called Punch , if I remember the name aright, made a pun on the subject, which was partially intelligible with the aid of italics and the laryngoscope. For my own part, I was too much occupied in teaching my wife to ride a Bantam, and too busy upon a series of papers in Nature on the turpitude of the classical professoriate of the University of London, to give my undivided attention to the impending disaster. I cannot divide things easily; I am an indivisible man. But one night I went for a bicycle ride with my wife. She was a Bantam of delight, I can tell you, but she rode very badly. It was starlight, and I was attempting to explain the joke in the paper called, if I recollect aright, Punch . It was an extraordinarily sultry night, and I told her the names of all the stars she saw as she fell off her machine. She had a good bulk of falls. There were lights in the upper windows of the houses as the people went to bed. Grotesque and foolish as this will seem to the sober reader, it is absolutely true. Coming home, a party of bean-feasters from Wimbledon, Wormwood Scrubs, or Woking passed us, singing and playing concertinas. It all seemed so safe and tranquil. But the Wenuses were even then on their milky way. II. THE FALLING STAR T

The Chiel
A big turn-on THE holiday season campaign to get motorists to drive with lights on was, to all intents and purposes, a success and achieved a number of pluses that hopefully will continue to be developed. The whole idea, as most will know but which needs to be emphasised to those ignorant of the fact, is not to see better, but to be seen. It might seem obvious that in broad daylight when the sun is shining, you will be seen, but it needs to be emphasised that car lights should always be switched on immediately there is a suggestion of fading light. To me that's the most important reason for using them in daylight hours ... TO BE SEEN. There are modern upmarket cars that have an automatic lights on facility. Just leave the light switch in the automatic mode and a sensor switches them on and off for you when they should be on or even before you feel they are needed. For instance they'll come on when you enter a road tunnel or when you drive into your garage. They switch on automatically when there is heavy cloud about and perhaps rain is threatening and of course they're on permanently at night, all done by photosynthetic sensors. Another useful side to this is that when the ignition is switched off and lights were on when you did so, they will stay on for 30 or 40 seconds more to allow you to exit a dark garage or poorly lit area, and then go off on their own.

Saturday, February 21, 1998 The Chiel Wrong place, time SOMETIMES you're in the right place at the right time; sometimes you're not. There we were driving home from Cape Town this week after settling Miss Chiel into UCT (settling may not be quite the right word) when a man in blue stepped out into the road beckoning to "pull in for a chat". Clearly we were not in the right place. "You have been recorded exceeding the speed limit," he said in his sternest traffic cop voice. "Would you like to step over there (pointing to the boot of a car where his colleague sat cradling a gatsometer) and examine the machine?" "No thanks," I said with heart in mouth. "How fast was I going?" "124 kilometres and hour." "But I'm allowed to do 120," I protested. "No, it's 100," he countered. Then Mrs Chiel chipped in: "But how come the toll road is only 100?" "You have just passed through a 100km/h zone. This is a dangerous intersection with the forest station staff crossing the national road and two children have been knocked down in the past month." It was no good telling him we hadn't seen the sign (which we hadn't) and anyway that was no excuse either. We could see that discussion of the pros and cons of 100 or 120 wasn't going to get us anywhere as he hauled out his clipboard and asked for my driver's licence. These chaps have heard it all before and much, much more besides. We'd just have to take the medicine.
