(aka "The Civil War")
By
Lucan
(Marcus Annaeus Lucanus)
A.D. 39 - A.D. 65
Online Medieval and Classical Library Release #16b
Originally written in Latin, approximately A.D. 61-65, by the Roman poet Lucan, and probably left unfinished upon his death in A.D. 65. Although the work has been generally known through most of history as the "Pharsalia", modern scholarship tends to agree that this was not Lucan's choice for a title. English translation by Sir Edward Ridley, 1896. The text of this edition is based on that published as "The Pharsalia of Lucan", as translated by Sir Edward Ridley (Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1896). This edition is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN in the United States. This electronic edition was edited, proofed, and prepared by Douglas B. Killings (DeTroyes@AOL.COM), May 1996. Preparer's Notes
CONTENTS PREPARER'S NOTES: Lucan's "Pharsalia" (or, "Civil War", as many scholars now prefer to call it) was written approximately a century after the events it chronicles took place.

Lucan Chess Club
Hanbury Lane, Lucan Village Lucan Chess club is open every Thursday night and anyone who knows how to play the game is more than welcome to attend. Lucan has one team in Division 1 of the Leinster Chess Leagues ( Armstrong Cup )  Normally, casual chess is being played in a very relaxed atmosphere but occasionally the club might be playing a match in the Leinster League and on these occasions there may be a more serious air about the room. The clubroom is probably one of the most comfortable in the Leinster Leagues, with comfortable chairs and plenty of table space. The room is accessed from the side entrance to the Presbyterian Church. It is strictly non-smoking and there is no alcohol allowed on the premises. Kenny's pub is very close and members have been known to have apres match drinks and chat there. The club secretary and team captain is JIM MURRAY who will be delighted to answer any enquiries. Jim's mobile no. is 086 3547530.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Marcus Annaeus Lucanus November 3 , AD April 30 ), better known in English as Lucan , was a Roman poet , and is one of the outstanding figures of the Silver Latin period. Lucan was born in Cordoba in present-day Spain , and was the nephew of Seneca the Younger . His mother was Acilia ; his father, Marcus Annaeus Mela , had amassed great wealth as imperial procurator for the provinces. From a memoir which is generally attributed to Suetonius we learn that Lucan was taken to Rome at the age of eight months and displayed remarkable precocity. He mentioned Mevania , and may have spent time there. There is reason to believe he studied under the Stoic philosopher Cornutus He found success under Nero , and won a prize for poetry in . His epic poem, Pharsalia (but labelled Bellum civile in the manuscripts), which told the story of the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey , was much acclaimed. However, he soon fell out of favor, and was lured into the conspiracy of Gaius Calpurnius Piso . His treason having been discovered, he was obliged to commit

Earl of Lucan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Lord Lucan Earl of Lucan was a title in the Irish peerage which has been possessed by two related Irish families in creations of 1691 and 1795. The current holder is presumed to be Richard Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan , who vanished in The subsidiary titles associated with the Earldom are: Baron Lucan , of Castlebar in the County of Mayo (created 1776), and Baron Bingham , of Melcombe Bingham in the County of Dorset (1934). The first is in the Peerage of Ireland , the second in the Peerage of the United Kingdom In Patrick Sarsfield , who had been one of King James II 's senior Irish commanders during his battles in Ireland with William of Orange for the English, Scottish and Irish thrones (see Glorious Revolution ) was given the title of Earl of Lucan . Sarsfield's son James Sarsfield died without an heir in and the title passed out of use. Patrick Sarsfield's great nephew, Charles Bingham had the title restored in . Due to the long period in which the title was in abeyance, and because legal questions had existed over whether James II was still king when awarding the title and so entitled to enoble Sarsfield, Charles Bingham is usually known as the 1st Earl of Lucan. Patrick Sarsfield is often referred to simply as the Earl of Lucan. The title became notorious after the disappearance in of the 7th Earl , who is suspected of the murder of his children's nanny. Lord Lucan's son and heir cannot inherit the Earldom until his father is declared legally dead. Thus, whilst Lord Lucan's whereabouts are unknown, his son remains known by his
