Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

Mars Timeline of Discovery:
1800 thru 1962
By Jim Plaxco Last Updated: December 1999
The Mars Timeline of Discovery is a work in progress. Its goal is to give the reader a general feel for the progress in humankind's understanding of the planet Mars. The timeline is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers the years 1570BC thru 1799. Part 2, this document, covers the years 1800 thru 1962. Please note that only brief references are given herein to the various planetary missions to Mars for the purpose of placing other advances in context. A much fuller treatment of these missions is provided separately in the Robotic Missions area. Yellow Clouds Observed on Mars H. Falaugergues records observing yellow clouds on Mars. Schiaparelli Produces Map of Mars with Canali Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910), an Italian astronomer, produces a detailed map of Mars based on his observations of the planet with an 8.5 inch refractor during a favorable conjunction. His map gave classical names to the features he observed. These feature names became widely accepted. This map is also famous for the inclusion of features Schiaparelli identified as canali , an Italian word for a naturally occuring channel.

British Astronomer Royal, Sir William Herschel studied Mars between 1777 and 1783. He postulates a 30 degree axial tilt and notes that faint stars which passed near Mars were not dimmed, indicating a thin atmosphere. Hershel observed seasonal changes of the polar caps and suggested that they are snow and ice. Founder of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, strong supporter of the theory of canals on the planet Mars, first to realize the possibility of a ninth planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. Percival Lowell was born in 1855 to a distinguished New England family. His younger brother was president of Harvard University and his sister was a well-known writer. Lowell also attended Harvard and graduated in 1876 with a distinction in mathematics. After traveling in the Far East for a number of years, he eventually developed a fond interest in astronomy. He was particularly interested in Mars and its "canals" that had supposedly been discovered by the Italian astronomer, Schaparelli. In 1894, Lowell founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The observatory was ideally situated at an altitude of 7000 feet. The high altitude combined with the dry desert air made this site ideal for observing Mars, which was at that time very close to the Earth. Lowell observed the red planet for 15 years. He made intricate and detailed drawings of the planet's surface showing a complex network of intersecting lines and dark regions. Lowell believed these lines to be canals built by an advanced civilization of intelligent beings. He asserted that these canals were being used by a desperate race to transport precious water from the planet's icy poles. The dark regions were believed to be oases of green vegetation made possible by the irrigating canals. Lowell published these theories in three books:

LOWELL, PERCIVAL (1855 - 1916), American astronomer, was born at Boston, Mass.. March 13. 1855 He Graduated from Harvard in 1876 and then engaged in business. He began to specialize in astronomy in 1894 and established the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., for the purpose of exhaustive planetary research. He was particularly interested in observing Mars and wrote books such as Mars us the Abode of Life (1908), urging that the Martian canals represented vegetation along artificial waterways. Later the canals were photographed. Lowell became the leading authority on Mars, and maintained that all evidence pointed to the existence of life on Mars. He assiduously observed Mercury and Venus, but his greatest contribution was the announcement of a probable trans-Neptunian planet. Lowell and W. H. Pickering , working independently, predicted the position of this planet, which in 1930 was announced as Pluto. He died at Flagstaff, Ariz., Nov. 12, l916.

The Canal Craze begins! In 1877, Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli (1835 - 1910) announces that he has seen "canali" on Mars. If translated correctly, this announcement would have been interpreted as "channels", but with the excitement building over the Suez Canal, it was translated as "canals", and thus began a detour in the history of Mars exploration. THE 1800s (The Canal Craze)
Honore Flaugergues, a French amateur astronomer, notices "yellow clouds" on the surface of Mars, which were later found to be dust clouds.
Flaugergues notices that the polar ice cap melts significantly in the Martian spring. He concludes that this implies that Mars is hotter than Earth.
Wilhelm Beer (1797 - 1850) and Johann von Maedler (1794 - 1874) observe Mars over periods of 759, 1604, and 2234 days, and determine that the rotational period of Mars is 24 hours, 37 minutes, 22.6 seconds, which is surprisingly close to the currently accepted value of 24 hours, 37 minutes, 22.7 seconds.
William Whewell concludes that Mars has green seas and red land, and wonders if there is extraterrestrial life.

Sus publicaciones: Mars Mars and Its Canals (1906), y

Percival Lowell (1855 - 1916)
Wells pubblicò The war of the World gli omini verdi "spostamento verso il rosso " delle galassie.
