20th Century History

Mr. Lowell Goes to Asia By Kenneth Champeon Review of Percival Lowell's The Soul of the Far East Contemporary travel writers usually set out to describe a particular place. A travel writer of, say, a century ago set out to explain the place, and in the process ended up trying to explain the whole world. Travel writing and anthropology and philosophy were of a piece. Such is the glory and the folly of The Soul of the Far East , an attempt by American astronomer Percival Lowell (1855-1916) to explain China, Korea, and especially Japan to a West then increasingly fearful of the "Yellow Peril." Glory, because so many of Lowell's observations on Far Eastern life remain prescient and acute; folly, because for an outsider to generalize about such an enormity as the Far East will inevitably be seen as, at best presumptuous, in any case simplistic, at worst racist. But those were different times. To know anything about a far-off and inaccessible land, one had to rely on those few with access. Even today, the Far East is not especially known for its command of Western languages; if it does not bother to explain itself to the West, the West will do the job, however faulted, instead.

Life on Mars? Did it Come from Earth?
Hubert P. Yockey
Abstract
Review of the "evidence" of past life on Mars from the meteorite AHL84001 shows that only those already persuaded could be convinced. The organic compounds found lack the oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur that compose the amino acids that form protein. The authors of the report in Science readily admit that "organic compounds" does not mean "biogenic compounds." The "evidence" from AHL84001, like Rorschach inkblots, tells us more about the role of preconceptions than about Mars. President Clinton gave a news conference on the South Lawn of the White House on August 7, 1996. He spoke about the meteorite Allan Hills 84001 or for short, ALH84001 (See Figure 1 ). The President noted that ALH84001 had been picked up on a glacier in Antarctica in 1984. He discussed briefly the history of ALH84001 from its formation four billion years ago on Mars, its escape as a consequence of the shock from the impact of a body striking Mars, the 16 million-year journey through space and its arrival 13, 000 years ago on a glacier in Antarctica. He expressed both enthusiasm and caution on the question that ALH84001 carries "evidence" of past life on Mars. He supported an aggressive plan for the robotic exploration of Mars and noted that an unmanned mission to Mars is scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center in November, 1996 and a second mission will lift off in December, 1996. He noted that the first mission is to land on Mars on July 4, 1997Independence Day!

‘The Congressional Library’ Amy Lowell’s Word Portrait of the Library of Congress BY KURT S. MAIER
As the Library’s Bicentennial year draws to a close, the Bulletin takes a look at a poem written in the Library’s honor 78 years ago. In December 1922 the Literary Digest International Book Review published Amy Lowell’s “The Congressional Library.” The poem found no response with readers. Indeed, the only letter to the editor mentioning it was from Lowell herself, who pointed out in the January 1923 issue that the typesetter had transposed pages two and three of her manuscript “to the utter confusion of the poem.” The editor accommodated Lowell by reprinting her work in its correct form. Lowell, far from being the proverbially poor poet, was born in 1874 into a distinguished Massachusetts family and received the best education available to women in the 19th century. Other prominent Lowells include her first cousin, the aristocratic poet James Russell Lowell (1819-1891), her brother Percival (1855-1916), who left his mark as an astronomer, and her cousin-poet Robert Lowell (1917-1977). Until her death in 1925, Amy Lowell was also a noted essayist and biographer. Her first poems had been conventional. But joining the Imagist school of poet Ezra Pound, she soon became one of its leading proponents, together with Hilda Doolittle, William Butler Yeats, Ford Madox Ford, Richard Aldington and John Gould Fletcher.

The Martian Kinotypes were created by the Cosmic Baseball Association in December 1996. The Kinotypes will be playing in the CBA Underleague during the 1997 Season The Kinotypes consist of films that have the word "Mars" in the title. The available draft pool for the team excludes those films that use Mars in the plot but do not include Mars in the film's title. Therefore, the movie version of H.G. Wells' book, War of the Worlds , is not eligible as a player. Wells himself, however, is the team's field manager. Every image on this plate contains a hypertext link. Most of the links are to Mars-related sites on the World Wide Web. There are over 40 links to other sites. The idea is to let you randomly hyperhike around the environment in search of more Mars information. You will need to use your browser's BACK or maybe the BOOKMARK function if you want to return to this site. The roster is organized in chronological order based on the film's release date.

continued To complement these government efforts, commercial Mars propaganda heavily targets the future generation with t-shirts, caps, and toys; for example, this holiday season featured NASA’s special edition Mars Rover Lego Sets and Hot Wheels Miniature Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Mars "Sojourner" Rover. Pulp fiction, comic books, Westerns, and science-fiction films have played a critical role in creating and maintaining these myths. Hollywood, Southern California’s own "dream factory," has not only fueled the engine keeping the California dream alive throughout the years, but has played an integral role in promoting Mars as well. Films like Forbidden Planet Robinson Crusoe on Mars Total Recall (1990), and Mission to Mars The Searchers (1956). The relationship between science fiction and the practice of science has changed dramatically since the 1950s. Then, fictionalized depictions of attacking aliens, imaginary deep-sea creatures, etc., were viewed as harmful misinformation and were kept within the realm of art and popular culture, far from science. Today, sensational stories are embraced and strategically employed by NASA and the Mars Society to create effective propaganda for future trips to Mars.
