Lowell, Percival
US astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond Neptune, starting the search that led to the discovery of Pluto 1930. In 1894 he founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he reported seeing 'canals' (now known to be optical effects and natural formations) on the surface of Mars.
Lowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied mathematics at Harvard. He spent 16 years in business and diplomacy, mainly in the Far East, before taking up astronomy, becoming professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1902.
Influenced strongly by the work of Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, Lowell set up his observatory at Flagstaff originally with the sole intention of confirming the presence of advanced life forms on Mars. He thought he could make out a complex and regular network of canals and regular seasonal variations that to him indicated agricultural activity. He led an expedition to the Chilean Andes in 1907 which produced the first high-quality photographs of the planet.

Tuesday honors the god of war called Mars by the Romans and Ares (ER eez) by the Greeks. "All's fair in love and war" may be a reference to his affair with Venus. The Romans made iron sacred to Mars and often had amulets made from the metal to protect them in battle.
Sometimes Mars was related to agriculture and has his own spring month named after him, March. Spring was also the time the Roman legions began their conquests and you guessed it, got their march-ing orders. 300 BC The Greek philospher Artistotle (384-322 BC) observes that the Moon occults (passes in front of) Mars. He then concludes that Mars must be higher up in the heavens. Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) determines the position of Mars in the night sky by taking the most detailed measurements of the planet to date. Although the telescope has yet to be invented, Brahe is able to plot the Red Planet by utilizing instruments that accurately determine the position of objects in the night sky from the Uraniborg observatory he directed.

Lagrange, Joseph Louis
French mathematician and astronomer. Lagrange made a number of contributions to the study of celestial mechanics. He showed that three bodies can lie at the apexes of an equilateral triangle which rotates in its plane. If one of the bodies is sufficiently massive compared with the other two, then the triangular configuration is apparently stable. Several examples are known in the solar system: Such bodies are sometimes refered to as Trojans . The leading apex of the triangle is known as the leading Lagrange point or L4; the trailing apex is the trailing Lagrange point or L5.

Lagrangian point
One of the solutions to the three-body problem discovered by the eighteenth century French mathematician Lagrange ; the two stable Lagrangian points, L-4 and L-5, lie in the orbit of the primary body, leading and trailing it by a 60-degree arc.

Lassell, William
British astronomer. Lassell discovered Neptune 's largest satellite, Triton and (with William Cranch Bond ) discovered Saturn 's moon Hyperion . A successful brewer before turning to astronomy.

lava
A general term for molten rock that is extruded onto the surface.

Percival Lowell
Percival Lowell, an astronomer was a member of a Boston Unitarian family, which included his older brother, A. Lawrence Lowell, who became president of Harvard, and his sister Amy Lowell, the Imagist poet. Upon graduating from Harvard College where he excelled in mathematics, Percival Lowell visited Japan and Korea. He not only traveled but also played a diplomatic role and wrote four books about East Asia.
Shifting his interests to astronomy, he established the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894 and in 1895 wrote the first of his three books about the planet Mars. Although Lowell mistakenly concluded that Mars displayed evidence of intelligent beings, he awakened wide popular interest in the planet, including fantasy literature, War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells in 1898, as well as a riot inducing 1938 radio broadcast declaring Invasion from Mars by Orson Wells.
Although Percival Lowell did not live to see the reliable scientific evidence fulfilling his mathematical prediction of a planet beyond Neptune, Pluto was discovered in 1930.

Percival Lowell
(1855-1916), astronomer and founder of the Lowell Observatory. Percival decided to undertake the study of astronomy in the 1890’s, concentrating first on the planet Mars. He eventually predicted the existence of the planet Pluto and initiated the search that ended in its discovery 14 years after his death. He died on Nov. 12, 1916, in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he had built his own observatory.
A man of many talents and interests, Percival also devoted himself to literature and travel, much of the time in the Far East. He traveled and lived for almost 10 years in Japan and Korea, and acted as counselor and foreign secretary to the Korean Special Mission to the United States (1883). He described his travels in several books, including Choson, the Land of the Morning Calm - A Sketch of Korea

With an introduction by David Strauss, Kalamazoo College, Michigan
Percival Lowell (1855-1916) was born in a wealthy Boston family as elder brother of the poet Amy Lowell and Harvard President Lawrence Lowell. After graduating from Harvard College in 1876, he entered business. From 1883 to 1893, he travelled extensively in Asia and related his experiences in a series of articles and books. His works were well received and contributed considerably to the awakening American interest in Korea and Japan. The Soul of the Far East was praised by Lafcadio Hearn for its insight into the thought of the "Orient". In Occult Japan , Lowell describes the practices and rites of Shinto, in which he became interested following a trip up the sacred mountain Ontake. He also developed an interest in astronomy and founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, in 1894. From 1902, Lowell was non-resident professor of astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was one of the main American disciples of Herbert Spencer. David Strauss is the author of the recent biography Percival Lowell: The Culture and Science of a Boston Brahmin

LAGRANGE POINTS

Lagrange points (named for Josef Lagrange, the Italian-French mathematician who discovered them) are a set of five special points that occur between two large objects. At these points, a small orbiting object can orbit at a constant distance from both of the larger masses. This happens because at those five points, the gravitational force of the large objects is exactly equal to the centripetal force required to rotate with the objects. Three of the points are unstable (L , L , and L ) and two are stable(L and L ). Each of the stable Lagrange points forms an equilateral triangle with the two large masses.
LAIKA

Laika (meaning "barker" in Russian) was the first dog sent into orbit around the Earth. She rode on Sputnik 2, a Russian mission that blasted off on November 3, 1957 (Sputnik 2 was a metal sphere that weighed about 250 pounds = 113 kg). Laika was originally thought to have survived in Earth orbit for four days, dying in space when the batteries to the cabin over-heated. In 2002, it was revealed that Laika died roughly 5 to 7 hours into the flight, from overheating and stress. After orbiting the Earth 2,570 times, Sputnik 2 fell back to Earth on April 14, 1958, burning up during re-entry. Laika was a female mutt who was part Siberian Husky.

HALL OF ASTRONOMERS
An astronomer is someone who studies astronomy. The following night-owls are important astronomers, astrophysicists, mathematicians, and other scientists who have contributed greatly to our knowledge of the universe.
ADAMS, JOHN C.
John Couch Adams (1819-1892) was an English astronomer and mathematician who, at 24 years old, predicted the existence of the planet Neptune (Le Verrier also predicted its existence, independently). AIRY, GEORGE Sir George Bidell Airy (1801-1892) was the director of Greenwich Observatory/Astronomer Royal of England from 1835 to 1881. Airy installed a transit (a precise surveying device) at Greenwich, England, which was used to define the zero degree meridian of the Earth (zero-degrees longitude). A crater on Mars about 5 degrees south of the equator and on what is defined as Mars' prime meridian (zero-degrees longitude) is call Airy. A small crater within this crater (which is called Airy-0) is where the meridian line (zero-degrees longitude) crosses. A crater on the moon is also named for him (latitude 18.1 degrees, longitude 354.3 degrees, diameter 36 km). Airy is supposed to have stated incorrectly that Charles Babbage's new "analytical engine" (the predecessor of the computer) was "worthless," effectively ending Babbage's government funding.

The God of War Although this fiery and tempestuous image is hardly conducive to the existence of life, Mars has, nevertheless, fascinated mankind more than any other planet. At first glance, Mars seems very Earthlike: it is the nearest planet whose surface we can see; it has polar ice caps, drifting white clouds, raging dust storms, seasonally changing patterns on its surface and even a 24-hour day. It is thus tempting to think of it as an inhabited world and has consequently become a mythic figure onto which we have projected our earthly hopes and fears. canali , an Italian word for grooves or channels. Schiaparelli made no mention of the nature of these canali , but, unfortunately, the word was translated into English as canals , a word that implies man-made (or, in this case, Martian-made) constructions and thus a Mars mania swept across Europe and America.
