Lowell, Percival (1855-1916)
Lowell sat at the 24-inch reflector Born into a wealthy and well-known Bostonian family, Lowell gave no early indication of the obsession that would come to dominate his life and create an enduring romance involving extraterrestrial canals (see Mars, canals ) and an advanced Martian civilization (see Mars, life on ). At Harvard, where for 24 years his brother was president, he showed a talent for mathematics and even presented an astronomical address entitled "The Nebular Hypothesis". But following his graduation, he devoted the next 17 years to family business concerns and three extended stays in the Orient. He served as Foreign Secretary and Counselor to the first Korean diplomatic mission and, during his time in Korea and Japan, wrote four books on Eastern thought and culture. Then, for some reason which is not entirely clear, he caught the Mars bug. Perhaps he had been inspired by reading Flammarion 's popular treatise on the planet. Or, it may have been

Prof. Lowell Dies; Martian Theory His
Astronomer Who Declared the Planet Inhabited Succumbs at Flagstaff Observatory He Detected 550 Canals Author of Books on Far East and Brother of President of Harvard Was Honored by Scientists By THE NEW YORK TIMES
LAGSTAFF, Ariz., Nov. 13.Dr. Percival Lowell, founder and Director of the Lowell Observatory here, and an astronomer of international reputation, died here last night from a stroke of apoplexy suffered yesterday morning. Dr. Lowell apparently was in good health when he arrived here recently from a lecture trip. Professor Percival Lowell, astronomer and author of books on the Far East, whose popular fame rests on the association of his name with the theory that Mars is inhabited, was born in Boston on March 13, 1855. The great controversy among astronomers, in which he played a leading part, began in 1907 after his announcement that the observations made by his astronomical station, the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., proved that Mars was inhabited. Professor Lowell had put the theory forward tentatively as early as 1895. Many eminent astronomers in this country and Europe accepted his conclusions of 1907 as unassailable. Others were skeptical. Professor Lowell continued from year to year to produce fresh evidence in favor of his theory by his observations at Flagstaff, where is located the best astronomical plant in the world for the observation of Mars.

Percival Lowell made this globe of Mars summarizing his observations of the planet for the year 1901. - Loaned by Lowell Observatory The straight lines represent features that were first "seen" by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli in 1877. He called them canali , an Italian word meaning channels . The canali were also observed by Lowell who concluded they were canals built by intelligent beings. The canals supposedly supplied water from the melting polar caps to a desert world. In his book " Mars as the Abode of Life ", published in 1908, Percival Lowell presented his theory that Mars' canals were built by intelligent beings.

Lowell, Percival
Encyclopedia Article Lowell, Percival (1855-1916), American astronomer, who made significant observations of the planets. He is best known for his belief that there are canals on the surface of Mars and that these canals provide evidence for the existence of intelligent life there. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University, Lowell traveled in Japan and Korea from 1877 until 1893 and later wrote books about East Asia. In 1894 he founded and became director of the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona. From 1902 until his death, he was nonresident professor of astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He predicted the discovery of Pluto , which astronomers first observed in 1930 at the Lowell Observatory. Lowell's writings include

Synopsis
Scanning, one evening, in Tokyo, the map of Japan, in a vague, itinerary way, with the look one first gives to the crowd of faces in a ballroom, my eye was caught by the pose of a province that stood out in graphic mystery from the western coast. It made a striking figure there, with its deep-bosomed bays and its bold headlands. Its name, it appeared, was Noto; and the name too pleased me. I liked its vowel color; I liked its consonant form, the liquid n and the decisive t. Whimsically, if you please, it suggested both womanliness and will. The more I looked the more I longed, until the desire carried me not simply off my feet, but on to them...
